IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In several nations, owning a house rather than renting is very benificial for people because by owning a house people can get out the burden of the rent as well as the problems that people face in a rented house. Moreover, people in our country had a desire to own at least one house in their lifetime. According to my perception it is a positive situation as people can have fredom of their own house and can do any kind of renovation and decoration which is not possible in rented houses.

The most imporatant factor of owning a house is that people became exhausted of monthly rents, bills and gas prices and they think that it can increase their anxiety as well as their stress levels. Furthermore, they can face many problems in the rented house as they are not able to make renovations and decorations they want in the rented house as compared to the house they own.

In addition to that, people in some countries have a desire to own a house in their life time because they think that it is far more convinient and give them a freedom as well a sense of satisfaction, or it could be to show their wealth to other.

To conclude, I think that its a positive situation that people want to own their own house rather than renting it as they can buy a house on loan as well . They could also get the freedom from the rents and bills.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You answer both parts of the question: you give reasons for home ownership, including avoiding rent and having more freedom to renovate, and you clearly call it a positive situation. These points are relevant, but the explanation remains limited and several claims are asserted rather than developed. For example, the idea that rent, bills and gas prices increase anxiety is not explained, and the suggestion that ownership can display wealth is introduced without showing why this matters. The conclusion repeats the benefits rather than adding a considered final point. To strengthen the response, explain the reasons with specific consequences or examples, and address the possible drawbacks of prioritising ownership before confirming your positive view.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an opening position, supporting paragraphs and a conclusion. The ideas are generally grouped by topic, and linking phrases such as “Moreover,” “Furthermore” and “In addition to that” help signal additions. However, progression is limited because the same points—freedom, renovation and relief from rent—are repeated in several paragraphs. Some connections are unclear: the sentence about “bills and gas prices” does not clearly explain how owning a home removes these costs, and “or it could be to show their wealth” feels loosely attached to the preceding reason. Use fewer, more purposeful transitions and organise each paragraph around a distinct reason, developing it before moving on.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “monthly rents,” “renovations,” “decorations,” “anxiety” and “sense of satisfaction.” This gives you enough language to communicate the main ideas, but the range is limited and some expressions are imprecise or repetitive, particularly repeated references to “freedom” and “own a house.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, such as “benificial,” “imporatant,” “fredom” and “convinient,” which reduce accuracy. Some collocations are awkward, for example “get out the burden of the rent” and “give them a freedom.” Build a more precise range for discussing housing costs, security and independence, and check spelling and natural word combinations during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, using clauses with “because,” “as” and “as they,” so there is some variety. However, control is inconsistent, especially in longer sentences. For example, “people in our country had a desire” shifts into the past without a clear reason, while “it is far more convenient and give them a freedom” has a subject–verb agreement error and an unnecessary article. The opening sentence also becomes difficult to follow because several ideas are joined together without clear grammatical boundaries. Review tense consistency, agreement and articles, and divide long sentences when their relationships are unclear. More accurate control of these structures would make your reasoning easier to follow.
