IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

For some countries, people prefer possessing a home to renting one, also it seems very important for them for some reason.

Some individuals might feel this way because if they rent a house or an apartment, they will simply give the money to landlords. On the other hand, as long as they can get a morgage or buy it with a bank loan, they wil be able to invest their money in paying for their own property. That's why working hard for having their own home might be one of the essential tasks for some people.

In my view, aiming to live for owning a home is a very positive attitude. It is important to feel assurance and safe for the future. In spite of the fact that buying their own house can be very challenging, the outcome will be invaluable.

Speaking of some challenges, owning a home tends to seem to be impossible for young adults since they will have to work hard to afford it. As a result, for some people prefer renting a house. Especially, those who are fond of wandering around the world and exploring things. For them, simply renting an accomodation might be a good choice because they don't need to be stuck with only one place permenantly. The can get the most out of the place where they stay for a while and move to another place anytime they want.

In conclusion, renting a home or owning it really depends on someone's preferences. Personally, I will say that the advantages of owning a property outweigh renting them. In contrast, for adventure seekers, it might be a different story.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question: you explain that renting can feel like money going to a landlord, while buying allows people to invest in their own property, and you clearly regard home ownership as positive. The discussion of young adults and people who enjoy travelling adds a relevant qualification, showing that renting can suit some lifestyles. However, the reasons why ownership matters in some countries are only partly explored; security is mentioned, but cultural, family or financial factors could be developed. Your conclusion also introduces a comparison with “adventure seekers” without fully reconciling it with your overall preference. More explanation and specific support would make the response more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, moving from the reason for preferring ownership to your view, a counterpoint about renting, and a conclusion. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “On the other hand” and “As a result” signal relationships between ideas. Some links are less smooth or precise: “For some people prefer renting a house” is grammatically incomplete, and “Speaking of some challenges” does not clearly connect the preceding positive view to the example that follows. The final paragraph repeats the contrast rather than synthesising the discussion. Use clearer topic sentences and make each paragraph’s main point explicit to strengthen progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including “landlords,” “bank loan,” “invaluable,” “young adults,” and “adventure seekers.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “feel assurance and safe,” “aiming to live for owning a home,” and “stuck with only one place permanently.” There are also spelling errors in “morgage,” “accomodation,” and “permenantly.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Focus on accurate collocations and check spelling, especially in key topic vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including conditional clauses (“if they rent…”) and a concessive structure (“In spite of the fact that…”). Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “For some people prefer renting a house” lacks a grammatical connection to the preceding sentence, while “The can get” has an incorrect subject form. In “the advantages of owning a property outweigh renting them,” the comparison and pronoun structure are not parallel. There are also awkward constructions such as “working hard for having their own home.” Practise building complete sentences and keeping comparisons grammatically parallel; greater accuracy across these structures would improve control.
