IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is very important for people, in some countries, to live in a owned house rather to live in rented one. This might be true because of affordablity and legal systems. In my view, considering the pros, it is a positive situation.
People rent a place to live when they are not able to afford to buy a houses, but in some countries, owning a private house is more affordable then paying regular rents. For instance, in small in the USA, rents are as much as they are in the cities, while the property prices are much lower. Therefore people spend thier money to purchase property, even with installments, rather then paying equivelent amount as rents, still they would not get to own the property. On top of that, even legal system can influence their choice. In some countries, people have to own a house to be called as a citizen. Consequently, individuals in many nations prefere to own a place over to rent one.
In my view, this is a positive situation considering how individuals are able to own a property, a the same cost of regular rents. People in many parts of the world just pay the rent regularly, which in long-term totals as a big number. In countries where owning is afforable, they woudl be able to get a property in their possession with the same amount of money. It gives them security that they can rely on for in their future.
In conclusion, cost of rent and property and legal system make it crucial for people to own a house in some countries. I believe this is a positive development considering how people can afford to own a house.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the prompt: you suggest affordability and legal requirements as reasons for home ownership, and you clearly state that you see it as positive. The affordability explanation is supported with a comparison between rents and property prices, while the security benefit gives your opinion some development. However, the legal-system point—“people have to own a house to be called as a citizen”—is asserted without explaining where or how this works, and the example about small towns in the USA is unclear. The positive evaluation also focuses mainly on financial security, so its implications could be explored further. Develop each reason with a clearer, more specific explanation and connect it directly to the question.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph explaining possible reasons, a paragraph giving your view, and a conclusion. The progression from causes to evaluation is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “For instance,” “Therefore,” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. At times, however, links feel mechanical, and the relationship between ideas is not fully clear—for example, the shift from affordability to citizenship requirements. The reference to “small in the USA” also interrupts the flow because the example is difficult to interpret. Use clearer transitions and make each paragraph’s main point explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “property prices,” “regular rents,” “legal system,” and “security.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions such as “installments” and “in their possession.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “affordablity,” “equivelent,” “prefere,” and “woudl,” and some phrases are unnatural or imprecise: “small in the USA,” “called as a citizen,” and “a the same cost.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the overall argument, but they limit precision and fluency. Check spelling carefully and learn natural collocations for discussing housing, costs, and legal status.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “because,” “while,” and “considering,” and most of the argument remains understandable. Some grammatical errors occur, particularly with articles, plurals, and sentence construction. For example, “a owned house” and “a houses” use incorrect article–noun forms, while “over to rent one” has an awkward comparison structure. In “It gives them security that they can rely on for in their future,” the clause and prepositions are not controlled. These errors rarely obscure your meaning, but they reduce accuracy. Practise article use and parallel comparisons, and proofread each sentence for complete, natural grammatical patterns.
