Student answer (Band 4.5)
In many parts of the world, purchasing a personal property is considered far more important than living in a rented house. This trend is mainly driven by the desire for financial security and social prestige, and in my opinion, it is largely a positive development as it encourages long-term saving and stability.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
Your introduction identifies two possible reasons—financial security and social prestige—and clearly states that you see home ownership as positive. However, the main body does not explain these reasons: it shifts to repeated claims about privacy, decorating a home and gardening, with little connection to the question of why ownership is important or whether this is positive overall. The conclusion repeats your position but does not add support. As a result, the task is addressed only minimally, and the ideas are not sufficiently developed. The response also falls 13 words short of the 250-word minimum; the 15 words copied from the prompt were not counted. Develop two relevant reasons and explain how each supports your view.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic overall shape: an introduction, a body paragraph and a conclusion, and the opening and closing both indicate a positive view. However, the body moves abruptly between security, controlling entry, buying possessions and gardening, without a clear sequence or explanation of how these points connect. Repeated openings such as “The personal home” and “This personal home” make the paragraph feel list-like, while “In conclusion” is the main explicit transition. Some references, including “this person” and “these things,” are unclear. To improve progression, organise the body around distinct reasons, use topic sentences, and connect each example directly to the central argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses a few relevant expressions, including “financial security,” “social prestige,” “long-term saving” and “stability,” especially in the introduction. In the body, however, vocabulary is basic and highly repetitive: “personal home,” “beautiful” and “home” recur, and several choices make meaning difficult to follow, such as “The personal home was no rent” and “This personal home gait.” Spelling and word-form errors, including “waist,” “flowere” and “gait,” also reduce clarity. This limited, repetitive range and the strain caused by inaccurate choices fit the current level. Build a topic-specific vocabulary set and check that each word fits its intended meaning and grammatical form.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The introduction contains a clear, well-formed complex sentence: “This trend is mainly driven by the desire for financial security and social prestige, and in my opinion, it is largely a positive development…” This shows some ability to combine ideas. In contrast, most body sentences rely on short, repetitive patterns and contain frequent errors that sometimes obscure meaning. For example, “The personal home was no rent” lacks a correct verb construction, while “There garden have many plants” has problems with the possessive form and subject–verb agreement. Articles, verb forms and sentence boundaries also need attention. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then combine related ideas using clauses such as “because” and “which”.
