IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Nowadays, in many countries there are people who buys their own house instead of renting one due to the fact that they might have a joint family. I think it is a positive aspect for those people.
To begin with, this case may be due to money or family members. As people might have their whole family with them. It might get easier for them to buy a house rather than renting an apartment. People having large family might cause problem to other people in their neighbourhood or even the owners of their rented apartments but if you have your own house there may not be much problem. For instance, my grandmother went to america to her daughter. While they were still in a rented apartment, she caused a lot of problem by digging there gardens but after her daughter bought there own house there was no such problems.
Furthermore, this is a positive situation as it would be comfortable as well as not much problematic. Having your own house means having a comfort zone. You can do whatever you want in you house without having to worry about you damaging other's property. For example, my uncle use to live in Australia in a rented apartment and oneday he was hosting a barbecue party. Suddenly, he burnt the ceiling of the house from inside and he was thrown out of the house. After that he bought his own house and even burnt the ceiling of his house as well but there was no problems faced by him.
In conclusion, having your own house is like having a better place to relax or get comfortable so I believe it is more of a positive situation than a negative one.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You give a clear opinion that home ownership is positive, and you offer reasons connected to family needs and freedom to use a home. The two personal examples also illustrate your point. However, the explanation of why owning is important remains narrow: the first paragraph focuses on large families causing problems in rented accommodation, while broader reasons such as security, investment, or stability are not explored. The examples about gardening and a barbecue support the comfort argument, but they are not fully explained as reasons people generally prioritise ownership. Develop the causes more directly and explain how each example demonstrates the wider point.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs signalled by “To begin with” and “Furthermore,” and a conclusion that restates your view. This gives the reader a basic route through the argument. However, progression within the paragraphs is sometimes unclear: “As people might have their whole family with them” is separated from the sentence it depends on, and the shift from family size to neighbours and landlords needs a clearer link. The examples also take up much of the development without consistently connecting back to the main claim. Use complete, logically linked explanations and clearer references, and make each paragraph build one central reason.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main ideas, with relevant phrases such as “joint family,” “rented apartment,” and “comfort zone.” However, the range is limited and several choices are repetitive or imprecise, including repeated use of “problem” and “positive situation.” Some expressions are awkward for the intended meaning, such as “caused a lot of problem” and “there may not be much problem.” There are also word-form or spelling errors, for example “there gardens” and “oneday,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise terms for the benefits and difficulties of renting, and check spelling and possessive forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “as” and “while,” but control is inconsistent. Several sentences are incomplete or incorrectly joined, such as “As people might have their whole family with them,” and “While they were still in a rented apartment, she caused…” has an unclear subject. Agreement and verb forms also need attention: “people who buys,” “my uncle use to live,” and “there was no problems.” Possessive and article patterns are also unreliable in phrases such as “in you house” and “other’s property.” These errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Practise complete sentence construction and check subject–verb agreement, tense, and possessives.
