IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many states, people think buying a house is more important than living on a rent. It's because buing a house is a kind of having a permanent asset for people and will longlast generations after generations. I think it is a positive situation.

People want to protect their wealth by purchesing permanent assets like houses , apartments, lands, golds and so on . The main thing is to protect their wealth from economic colloupse. Buying a house is not only for financial startagy but also it ensure a shelter for family. If a man buys a home, he will feel stress-free life in the terms of giving a shelter to his family which is a basic human need. Buying house is not a loss project, if someone wants to sell his house he can easily sell with a good profit or he can rent some part of his house and make a healthy amount of profit.

But, there are a few disadvatages, if everybody wants to buy house there will be a shortage of accomodations in small countries such as Bangladesh,South Korea. In fact, in Bangladesh shortage of land for accomodation reaches peak in the recent time. The value of land will be skyrocket and the middle-class people can't afford a piece of a small land. Rent will be also increased in that moment.

In conclusion, people wants to buy a house to protect their wealth from the continuation of value falling of money and for a secure shelter for his family. Though it has some promlems like increasing land price and shortage of accomodations. It is a positive side to make people stress-free for the shelter problem.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question: you explain that home ownership can protect wealth and provide secure shelter, and you clearly state that you see it as positive. The examples of selling a home for profit or renting part of it help support your reasons. You also acknowledge a counterpoint, noting that widespread ownership may contribute to land shortages and higher prices in Bangladesh and South Korea. However, the negative effects are not fully reconciled with your positive conclusion, and some claims—such as buying a house never being a loss—are asserted rather than qualified or supported. To strengthen the response, develop the reasons behind the cultural importance of ownership and explain more precisely why its benefits outweigh its wider costs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining the benefits, a paragraph presenting disadvantages, and a conclusion. The progression from personal financial security to broader housing-market effects is understandable, and signposts such as “But” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. This gives the essay a coherent arrangement. Some links are nevertheless mechanical, and the relationship between ideas is occasionally unclear—for example, the claim that buying a house is “not a loss project” leads into selling or renting it without a clear transition. The conclusion also repeats earlier points rather than synthesising the trade-off. Use more precise referencing and transitions, and make each paragraph’s central point and its connection to your position explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “permanent assets,” “economic collapse,” “shelter,” “shortage,” and “middle-class people.” These choices show an attempt to discuss both household security and wider economic consequences. However, spelling errors and inaccurate word forms are noticeable, including “buing,” “purchesing,” “colloupse,” “startagy,” and “disadvatages.” Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “living on a rent,” “healthy amount of profit,” and “the continuation of value falling of money.” These issues sometimes make the intended meaning less clear and limit the precision of the vocabulary. Build accuracy by checking spelling and learning common collocations, especially for financial and housing topics, rather than relying on direct translations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “if someone wants to sell his house he can easily sell” and a contrast introduced by “Though.” The main ideas are generally understandable, but errors in agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence construction recur. For example, “people wants” should use a plural verb, while “Buying house” needs an article or plural form. The final sentence beginning “Though it has some problems” is a dependent clause presented as a complete sentence. Punctuation also needs attention, particularly spacing around commas and the run-on presentation of “Bangladesh,South Korea.” Practise accurate clause boundaries and agreement while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
