IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In many countries , homeownership is considered more desirable than renting . This essay will discuss the reasons behind this preference, suchas financial security and status ect, and argue that it is largly a positive development despite some drawbacks.

Renting is seen like a wasting of money, and the landloed demands high rent. Own house is a investment for future .There is no worries in old age about renting or landlord kick you out of the house . Moreover, in many countries like Pakistan or India, having a own house is a symbol of success and honour .For example, if you have a good house, people will give you more respect and pride. it shows that yor are financial stable and living a happy life. Furthermore, parents want to leave property for their children , a rented house gives a feeling of temporary living. The biggest benefit of having your own house is the sense of security and comfortable and don't have to worry about being asked to leave.

it is a fact that having owm house givesa sense of stability, emontional peace and financial freedom but it also have some negative aspects, for instance, young generation take huge loans from back or workingplace , but later they can't pay back which causes stressed. House prices not only become too much but also everyone can afford it.

In conclusion, people prefer owning a home deu to investment benefits and social status and respect. Although it creates financial pressure, yet i believe it is a positive situation since it provides long-term stability.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the question: it gives reasons for preferring ownership, including investment, security and social respect, and states that this is “a positive situation” despite financial pressure. These points are relevant, and the examples of Pakistan and India help illustrate the social-status argument. However, some ideas are asserted rather than explained. For instance, the claim that owning a home brings “financial freedom” is not reconciled with the later point about unaffordable prices and loans, and the drawbacks are only briefly developed. To strengthen the response, explain how ownership can build long-term security while acknowledging who may be harmed by debt or high prices, and support each main reason with clearer detail.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining reasons, a paragraph on disadvantages, and a conclusion that restates the position. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Furthermore,” and “In conclusion” make the main stages easy to follow. However, the first body paragraph combines several ideas—investment, old-age security, social status and inheritance—without clear internal organisation, and some connections are abrupt. The sentence beginning “it is a fact” shifts to drawbacks without a clear transition, while the conclusion repeats points rather than synthesising them. Use topic sentences to signal each paragraph’s focus, group related reasons together, and make references such as “it” or “this” clearly identify the idea being discussed.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “financial security,” “symbol of success,” “social status,” “property,” and “long-term stability.” This gives the reader a clear sense of the main arguments. However, the range and control are limited by repeated basic wording and noticeable spelling, word-form and collocation errors. Examples include “a wasting of money,” “a investment,” “financial stable,” and “emontional peace”; these make some phrases awkward or less clear. Aim for more precise combinations such as “a waste of money,” “an investment,” “financially stable,” and “emotional security.” Proofread spelling carefully and vary repeated terms such as “house” and “positive” with accurate alternatives like “home,” “property,” and “beneficial.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

There are attempts to use both simple and more complex structures, including the contrast in “Although it creates financial pressure, yet I believe…” and the relative clause “a rented house gives a feeling of temporary living.” The overall meaning is generally recoverable, but errors in sentence formation and basic grammar occur across the response. For example, “Own house is a investment” needs an article and a more complete noun phrase, while “it also have” has subject–verb disagreement. The sentence “The biggest benefit … is the sense of security and comfortable and don’t have to worry” lacks a clear grammatical subject for the final clause. Practise accurate articles, agreement and complete clause structures, and use punctuation to separate ideas cleanly.
