IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some countries many people believe that owning a home rather than renting one is very important. I disagree with this statement. This kind of narrative can put one under a lot of pressure and result in negative thoughts and stress. In my opinion, some people want to have their own home to meet societies expectations, or because they become status conscious.

I believe one should differentiate between their wants and needs. As an adult, one is responsible for their finances and they should manage things accordingly. I think this mindset of owning a home so that one can have a good reputation in society has negatively influenced a lot of people especially youth. People have entered a constant loop of money chasing that results in neglecting their health and family life. However, if one can afford owning a home and it gives them a sense of security that is a different situation. Owning a home or not should not affect ones self respect, or how they treat others. In my analysis, a considerable amount of people are under a lot of stress because they are chasing materialistic things and wants to fit in the society.

I have seen many people renting home and living a satisfied life whereas there are numerous examples of people having their own home and still not content. For example, my aunt who lives in a rented home has so much gratitude in her heart. She focuses on her goals and health rather than worrying about materialistic things. This mindset helps her save money and live a happy life.

In conclusion, having a home where all of the members are happy and healthy is more important than owning one. As a community, all of us should treat eachother with respect and kindness so no one feels less worthy and as an individual one should become self aware of their circumstances to make the right decision.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear view that the pressure to own a home can be harmful, and you explain relevant effects such as financial stress, neglect of health and family, and social comparison. The example of your aunt also supports your point that renting can be compatible with a satisfying life. However, the task asks both why home ownership is especially important in some countries and whether this is positive or negative. Your response focuses mainly on why the belief can be negative; it only briefly acknowledges security and does not explain broader reasons, such as cultural expectations or investment. Develop both parts more evenly, and make the positive-or-negative judgement explicit and consistent from the introduction through the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, supporting paragraphs and a conclusion, and the ideas generally relate to your central concern about pressure to own property. Linking expressions such as “However,” “For example” and “In conclusion” help signal shifts. At times, though, the progression is less clear: the second paragraph moves from financial responsibility to reputation, social pressure, security and self-respect without clearly grouping these points. The personal example is relevant but could be connected more explicitly to the argument. Use topic sentences to establish each paragraph’s main purpose, and make references such as “this mindset” and “this kind of narrative” more precise so readers can follow exactly which idea they refer to.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss social pressure and personal wellbeing, including “sense of security,” “self-respect,” “gratitude” and “materialistic.” These choices help communicate your position, and the meaning remains clear. Some phrasing is imprecise or repetitive, however: “money chasing,” “wants to fit in the society” and repeated references to “materialistic things” do not always sound natural or precise. There are also word-form and spelling issues, such as “societies expectations” and “eachother.” Aim for more accurate collocations and a wider range of terms for housing, financial security and social status. Proofreading these details would make your vocabulary sound more controlled and appropriate for an academic essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of straightforward sentences and more complex structures, including conditional phrasing in “if one can afford owning a home” and a relative clause in “a home where all of the members are happy and healthy.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “one is responsible for their finances and they should manage things” shifts between singular and plural reference, while “a considerable amount of people” has a number-agreement problem. The final sentence also joins several ideas in a long structure that would be clearer if divided. Review agreement, pronoun consistency and sentence boundaries, and practise building complex sentences with clear clause relationships.
