IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In several countries, it is widely believed that having an owned house is more crucial than living in a rented one. In my opinion, I firmly believe that owning a home is important and helpful for living a peaceful and comfortable life.

There are numerous supporting perceptions existing; the first of them is that a person who has their own house has a permanent residence. In the present era, everywhere a permanent address is required and those who do not have it cannot claim it. Additionally, a home that is owned can be decorated and modified according to the person's wishes. For instance, when a man wants holes on the walls to hang photo frames on them, he can, whereas if he is in a rented home, he has to face accountability to his owner. And sometimes it leads to a misunderstanding between renters and tenants. Another good thing about having an owned home is a good amount of parking areas available. Therefore, an individual does not need to take stress to park vehicles.

Furthermore, the significance of having an owned home is that at the end of the month, one does not need to think of rent. As most of the people have a limited salary or earning sources, if at the end of the month they have to count a huge amount for paying rent, it sometimes leads to huge financial pressure for them. Consequently, sometimes it causes running out of money to buy groceries. Whereas having your own home is a blessing. An owned home is more secure because of several measures against intruders and it provides security to prevent hazards. Rented homes and their owners never think of proper security of the tenants or residents as they just think about rent. Lastly, an owner can have the opportunity to furnish the home and utilize the space as his preferences.

To sum up, I would say that having an owned home is significant for every person because it provides all the benefits and comforts that a person cannot have from a rented home. Moreover, it does not require any accountability to anyone and provides a zone where one can modify as his wish.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear view that owning a home is beneficial and offer several relevant reasons, including having a permanent address, being able to alter the property, avoiding rent, and feeling more secure. However, the task asks both why home ownership is important in some countries and whether this is positive or negative. The reasons are listed, but some are asserted rather than explained: for example, the claim that owned homes provide more parking or better protection from hazards is not supported with a clear explanation. The response also focuses almost entirely on advantages, so the positive judgement could be made more explicit and balanced by acknowledging a possible drawback, such as the financial burden of buying a home. Develop fewer points more fully and connect them directly to the question.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Ideas are generally grouped by topic, and linking expressions such as “Additionally,” “Furthermore,” and “To sum up” help signal progression. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The first body paragraph moves from permanent residence to decorating, parking and renter-owner misunderstandings without a strong organising thread. In the second, “Whereas having your own home is a blessing” does not clearly connect to the preceding point about financial pressure, and the security claim is introduced abruptly. References such as “it” and “they” can also leave the reader unsure which idea or group is meant. Group related reasons together and use clearer transitions to show how each example supports your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “permanent residence,” “financial pressure,” “intruders,” and “modify,” and the main meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at less common phrasing, but several choices are unnatural or imprecise, which limits the effectiveness of the vocabulary. For example, “supporting perceptions” is not a natural way to introduce reasons, “face accountability to his owner” does not express the intended idea clearly, and “a good amount of parking areas” is awkward. Repetition of “owned home” and “having an owned home” also makes the response less flexible. Choose more idiomatic collocations and vary the terms for ownership and renting, while ensuring that each word expresses the intended relationship precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “whereas,” “because,” and “if,” and most sentences remain understandable. Some grammatical errors occur, but they rarely prevent the reader from following your ideas. For instance, “a person who has their own house has a permanent residence” shifts from singular “a person” to “their,” while “as his preferences” and “as his wish” have inconsistent or incomplete structures. The sentence beginning “For instance, when a man wants holes…” is also awkwardly constructed, with unclear pronoun reference in “on them.” Review agreement and pronoun consistency, and check clause structure and articles when revising. More accurate control of these patterns would make your complex sentences clearer.
