IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
There is no denying the fact that in some countries it is very important for individuals to own a house rather than renting one. This essay will discuss why might this be the case and wether it is a positive or negative idea.
To begin with there are many reasons why owning a home is crucial for people. Firsly, having a house on your name will make you more comfortable, in other words, you will not be thinking about saving money for the rent and considering the possibility of beign kicked out some day. In addition, your family will be able to heirite the house after you so we can say the home belongs to the family, for example in algeria fathers buy more than one house so their children will heirite the home after meaning this can be considered as an invensment.
In terms of, wether if it is a positive or negative situation, financly it is a really usefull invensment because real estate is a great field of investment, it is also possible to say, when you buy a property your money will be safe due to the strong price increase in the real estate industry. Moreover, by owning a home you can be the one renting it to other people which is a good buisness idea, for instance you are going on a vacation or work trip, you can use this time to rent your house and make some money.
In conclusion, there are many reasons why this might be the case. And i believe that owning a home is a positive situation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the question: it suggests that ownership offers security and allows a property to be passed to children, then clearly states that owning a home is positive. The examples about Algerian families and renting out a property are relevant. However, the reasons are only partly developed: the inheritance point is asserted rather than explained, and the investment argument repeats the idea that property is financially beneficial without considering possible drawbacks or clarifying why this belief is especially important in some countries. The conclusion restates the position but adds little. To strengthen the response, explain the social or cultural reasons behind the preference and develop each main point with a clearer chain of reasoning and specific support.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay has a recognisable introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and its overall direction is understandable. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “In addition” and “Moreover” help signal the points. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, and some links are unclear or awkward. For example, “In terms of, wether if it is a positive or negative situation” does not introduce the paragraph smoothly, while “so we can say” and “for example” connect ideas without making their relationship precise. The conclusion begins with “And,” which weakens its connection to the preceding discussion. Use clearer topic sentences and organise each paragraph around one main idea, followed by explanation and a directly relevant example.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main ideas, with relevant terms such as “rent,” “property,” “investment” and “real estate.” There are also attempts to express concepts such as financial security and inheritance. However, the range is limited and several spelling errors and unnatural combinations are noticeable, including “heirite,” “invensment,” “usefull” and “buisness.” Phrases such as “a house on your name” and “strong price increase” are not natural in this context, and “good business idea” is rather general. These issues make the writing less precise and sometimes slow the reader. Build accuracy with common collocations for housing and finance, and proofread spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and longer sentences, including clauses with “because,” “which” and “when,” so there is some variety. However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to affect fluency. Examples include the indirect-question form “why might this be the case,” the construction “wether if it is,” and “your family will be able to heirite the house after you,” where the sentence pattern is incomplete or unclear. There are also problems with articles, punctuation and sentence boundaries, as in “renting one. This essay,” and the final “And i believe.” Practise forming indirect questions and subordinate clauses, and check sentence boundaries, capitalization and punctuation during revision.
