IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In many countries owning a home is considered more important than renting a home.

One major reason for owning a home is that, people cannot pay rent on monthly basis. They can save money and use it for other essential purposes. In contrast, people who live in a rented house have to pay a larger amount of money every year. A prime example is that, a family that lives in a rented house, which has to pay some fixed amount like 40000 every month, as compared to the family that owns a house, saves the same amount of money every month. Now the rented family in loss and the family with private house take benfit and use the save money for many other puposes. Therefore, owning houses provide essential benefits then rented house by saving money.

I generally believe this is a positive situtaion, although renting home offer greater flexibility to some people. Owning home provide you security and stability for families. Homeowners do not have to worry about changing their accommodation, and this also not affect on children and families life. For example, those families who change their accommodation every month or couple of month, their children may be suffer in their studies, also families see diffculties to travel their lagugae from one to another palce. Therefore owning a home allows families to long-term statbiliy and good children eduactiob.

Overall, i believe that owning is a positive situationn. This is because owning a home gives stability and financial benefit.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you suggest that people value ownership because it can reduce ongoing rent payments, and you clearly state that you see this as positive because it offers stability. The examples about saving money and children being affected by frequent moves are relevant. However, the explanation of why ownership matters is narrower than it could be: the rent comparison is repeated, and the claim that owners save the same amount each month is not fully explained, since homeowners may also have mortgage or maintenance costs. The flexibility of renting is acknowledged but only briefly. Develop the reasons with more precise support and explain the counterpoint before reaching your conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an opening, a paragraph explaining the financial reason, a paragraph giving your view, and a concluding statement. Linking expressions such as “In contrast,” “For example,” and “Therefore” help show relationships between ideas. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, particularly through repeated use of “Therefore,” and some references are unclear. For instance, “Now the rented family in loss” is difficult to connect smoothly to the comparison, while “this also not affect” does not clearly identify what “this” refers to. Organise each paragraph around one main point, use clearer references, and make the transitions between explanation and example more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “rent,” “accommodation,” “security,” “stability,” and “financial benefit,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repeated, especially “owning a home” and “rented house.” There are also noticeable spelling and word-choice problems, such as “benfit,” “puposes,” “situtaion,” and “statbiliy,” as well as unnatural combinations like “families see difficulties to travel their language.” These errors sometimes make the reader work to understand your meaning. Build a more precise set of housing-related expressions and check spelling and collocations carefully; for example, describe the practical difficulties of moving belongings between homes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “a family that lives in a rented house” and a contrast clause beginning “although.” The overall meaning can usually be followed, but errors in sentence construction and agreement are frequent enough to cause difficulty in places. Examples include “owning houses provide,” “Owning home provide,” and “their children may be suffer”; these need corrected subject–verb agreement and verb forms. The sentence beginning “A prime example is that” is also awkwardly constructed, and commas are sometimes placed incorrectly, as in “One major reason for owning a home is that, people…”. Practise accurate clause formation, articles, and verb patterns, then proofread each sentence.
