IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The growing trend of buying a home instead of renting is increasingly commomn in recent years. This essay will give detail of why may this be the case and explain why i belive that this is a negative situation.

There are several reason for this trend. One of the main reason why people owning a home rather than renting is that showoff. This is because every individual wants to show thier power of money. for example, richest person like mukest ambani owning most expensive house in india as he wants to show financial wealth to other individuals. in addition, another reason is that people can do longterm invesment through owns a house as a property. which means that people can convert thier money into double through buying home. As a result, buying home can creat good public image in society and help to do invesment as long term.

Regarding another question, i belive that this a negative impact. one major point is that it creats loan. This can lead into financial burden and creats problem such as overthinking. additionally, switching job into another city can creat big problem. As you have to move another city and buy or rent another house can demanding more money.

conclusion, people can show thier finacial status and do longterm investment through oweing home rather than renting it. I belive that this is a nagative impact because it creats burdan of loan.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both parts of the question: you suggest that home ownership can display wealth and provide a long-term investment, then state that you see it as negative because of debt and reduced flexibility when changing cities. However, the response is under the required 250 words, so the ideas have little room to develop. The reasons are also only partly explained: the example of Mukesh Ambani illustrates wealth, but does not show why owning a home is important to ordinary people in some countries. Your position is clear in the introduction and conclusion, although the discussion of the negative effects is brief. Develop each reason with a fuller explanation and a relevant, realistic example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, a paragraph explaining reasons, a paragraph giving your opinion, and a conclusion. This helps the reader identify the two parts of the task. However, progression within paragraphs is limited, and several links feel mechanical or unclear. For example, “As a result” introduces a summary of the reasons rather than a clear consequence, while “Regarding another question” is an awkward transition into your opinion. The conclusion repeats the same points without bringing them together. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each explanation directly to its example or consequence; also ensure that each paragraph develops one central idea in a logical sequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “financial burden,” “long-term investment,” and “financial wealth,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors make the writing less precise. Phrases such as “showoff,” “convert their money into double,” and “creat good public image” do not express the intended ideas naturally. Spelling errors such as “commomn,” “invesment,” and “nagative” are also noticeable. Aim to use accurate collocations for housing and finance, and check spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary would help you explain social status, investment returns, debt, and mobility without repeating the same basic terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer sentences, including “This can lead into financial burden and creats problem such as overthinking,” but control is inconsistent. Errors in sentence structure, verb forms, agreement, articles, and punctuation occur frequently and sometimes make the reader pause. For example, “One of the main reason … is that showoff” has problems with number and clause construction, while “people can do longterm invesment through owns a house” uses an incorrect verb pattern. Several sentences begin with lowercase “for example,” “in addition,” or “conclusion,” and the final paragraph lacks a complete introductory phrase. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then add subordinate clauses and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries.
