IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Each country differentiate from one another by its cultural idyoscynracies . each society has its own customs values and defintions of what is right and what is wrong ,what is normal and what is not . One of those idioscyncracies is how different each culture view the ownership of a house , some may argue that this is a sign of success and it is as important as a stable job or having a family others would consider it as less important and would be fine with just renting one.
The evidence shows that many countries consider owning a house a top priority as it presents a stable and safe long term asset and important to raise children .In addition, renting is a risky option as the renter can in any time request his house back which can lead to displacement of the family .
While others would prefer renting over owning for multiple reasons .for starter, Some people has occupations that requires constant travel thus owning a house would not be the smartest investment .Moreover ,some would prefer to save the money of buying a house and use it for other expenses like buying a car , or traveling and enjoying himself .
In my opinion ,while both sides have their reasons I believe that both opnions are shaped by the countries they are living in because in todays economy and especailly in the developed countries cost of real estate is rising sharply compared to the average salaries of people which make it quite hard for people to buy houses .However in other developing countries where the real estate domain is still small and houses are cheaper people would prefer buying hosues since they are relativel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You address both questions by explaining why home ownership can offer security and stability, and why some people prefer renting, such as those who travel for work. Your final paragraph also attempts to give a view by linking preferences to economic conditions. However, the position is not fully clear: you say both opinions are shaped by countries, but do not state directly whether the importance placed on owning a home is positive or negative. Several points are asserted rather than developed, and the conclusion is cut off before the comparison is completed. To strengthen the response, state a clear judgement and explain the consequences of ownership or renting with specific reasoning or examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph on ownership, one on renting, and a final paragraph giving your view. Connectors such as “In addition,” “Moreover,” and “However” help signal relationships between ideas. Nevertheless, progression is uneven. The opening spends considerable space on general cultural differences before reaching the topic, and the final paragraph introduces economic comparisons without bringing them to a complete conclusion. Some transitions are mechanical, and punctuation around linking phrases is inconsistent. Organise the essay more directly around the two task questions, use each paragraph to develop one main point, and finish with a concise conclusion that clearly answers whether this situation is positive or negative.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “stable and safe long term asset,” “displacement,” “occupations,” and “real estate,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also some appropriate contrasts between owning and renting. However, spelling errors and inaccurate or unnatural word choices are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause, for example “idyoscynracies,” “opnions,” and “domain” for the housing market. Phrases such as “request his house back” and “save the money of buying a house” are not natural collocations. Check spelling carefully and learn common combinations for housing and finance; this will make your ideas clearer and more precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “as,” “while,” and “since.” This gives the response some structural variety, but complex sentences are often difficult to control, and errors occur frequently enough to affect clarity. For example, “Each country differentiate” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “Some people has occupations that requires” contains agreement problems in both clauses. Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also unreliable: the opening is a long run-on, and several sentences begin after a full stop with a lowercase letter. Practise checking agreement, sentence boundaries, and complete clause structure. Breaking longer sentences into clearer units would improve accuracy without limiting your range.
