IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
People in some countries prefer to build or buy their own houses rather than living in a rented building.I believe it is a positive situation and I will explain the reasons behind this situation in this essay.
There are several factors to support this case. One of them is that living in a rented house is very costly.People spend a huge amount every month for house rents.Another factor is that while living in a rented house, people spend alot of money on renovation. However, instead of paying bills monthly, it is better to buy a flat on installments. In this way, same money can be used in building your own house. For example,in Europe different companies provide easy and long term installment plans. This is the reason, many people try to buy or build their own houses.
Although it is a clear positive situation, there are some drawbacks and limitations. Many people move to other cities for a temporary job and they have to live there for a limited time period. In such cases, living in a rented house is a better option. Also,if someone move to a new place for work it is better for him to first live in a rented appartment and try to get settle in the new place.
In my opinion buying your own house is a positive situation. This willl save your money and time.It will lessen burden and stress of rents and bills. In these years of inflation, people can save a lot of money by paying intallments of their own house rather than paying monthly rents.Once a house is build or bought they can live there for many years and it is a saving for their future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the prompt: you suggest that rent is costly and that buying can build long-term security, then state clearly that home ownership is positive. The examples about installment plans and people relocating for temporary work are relevant. However, the explanation of why ownership matters is not fully developed: the claim that renting involves substantial renovation costs is unclear, since tenants do not always pay for renovations, and the comparison between rent and installments needs more explanation. Your discussion of drawbacks is useful, but the essay could connect these points more directly to why ownership is especially important in some countries. Develop the reasons with clearer, more specific support and explain the limits of your position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction to reasons, a contrasting situation, and your opinion. Paragraphing helps the reader follow this progression, and signposts such as “Another factor,” “Although,” and “In my opinion” make the relationships between ideas visible. At times, however, linking feels mechanical, and some connections are not fully clear. For example, the shift from renovation costs to buying a flat on installments does not explain how the two points relate, while “This is the reason” repeats the preceding idea rather than advancing it. Improve cohesion by making each paragraph’s central point explicit and using pronouns and transitions only when their references are clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “rented house,” “installment plans,” “temporary job,” and “inflation.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “burden and stress” and “limited time period.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, and spelling errors are noticeable: “alot,” “appartment,” “intallments,” and “build” where “built” is intended. Phrases such as “house rents” and “get settle” also show limited control of collocation and word form. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision. Build a wider range of natural housing and financial expressions, and proofread spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple sentences and more complex forms, including a conditional example beginning “if someone move to a new place” and a contrast introduced by “Although.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries. For instance, “if someone move” should be “if someone moves,” and “Once a house is build or bought” should be “Once a house is built or bought.” Several sentences run together without spaces after full stops or commas, which weakens punctuation control. To improve, check subject–verb agreement and passive forms, and practise combining clauses accurately while keeping sentence boundaries clear.
