IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Home is the place where everyone feel relief and motivated. Many people believe that having own home is better than renting an appartment. This is a debatable topic nowadays, building a house is dream of many individuals.

I strongly believe that having a home is a achevement and a positive aspect. Paying rent every month is very tiring and hectic. In many countries the first goal of a person is to build a place where he or she can spend their whole life with their family. Home not only tides with emotion but also practically. For instant, if a person have his/her home and they are dealing with financial crisis they can give their home in rent or use it for land lease.Having a home is not only better idea but also preparing onself for uncertain crisis.People can get house insurance if they have their own home if any kind of natural or sudden problems that may arise. Having a home is an investment for lifetime.

People can design their house as they want to the interiors would be of their choice.

Despite of having many positive aspects, building a home may cost a life time savings of a person.Although having a home citizens have to pay tax whereas, renting costs no tax. Renting an apartment saves cost of maintainance and renovation.

In conclusion, having a house may have some financial drawbacks but the emotions that are attached to own house is everything a person want to have in their life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear view that owning a home is positive and offer relevant reasons, including avoiding monthly rent, having an asset during financial difficulty, and choosing the interior design. You also acknowledge drawbacks such as the cost of buying, taxes, and maintenance. However, the task asks why home ownership is especially important in some countries, and this cultural or social context is only briefly suggested through the idea of a lifelong family home. Several points are asserted rather than explained—for example, how a house could help during a financial crisis, or why renting involves no tax. Develop the reasons with clearer explanations and examples, and make the discussion of the opposing view more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable introduction, a main paragraph supporting ownership, a paragraph mentioning disadvantages, and a conclusion that restates your view. This gives the reader a basic route through the argument. However, the main paragraph contains many separate points, and the links between them are sometimes abrupt: the discussion moves from renting costs to leasing a home, insurance, investment, and interior design without a clear progression. Some linking phrases, such as “Despite of” and “Although,” are not used accurately, while “In conclusion” is joined directly to the following word. Organise the reasons into a clearer sequence, use paragraphing to separate distinct ideas, and make references between sentences more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “financial crisis,” “house insurance,” “natural” problems, “investment,” and “renovation.” These choices help communicate the general argument, and you attempt to express ideas beyond basic statements. However, the range is limited and several noticeable word-choice, spelling, or collocation problems make parts less natural, such as “feel relief,” “tides with emotion,” “for instant,” and “cost a life time savings.” There are also repeated general terms such as “home” and “having a home.” Build a more precise set of phrases for ownership, housing costs, security, and financial risk, and check spelling and collocations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including conditional ideas such as “if a person have his/her home” and a contrast beginning “Despite of having many positive aspects.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors occur frequently and sometimes make the relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Examples include subject–verb agreement in “everyone feel” and “a person have,” missing or incorrect articles in “having own home” and “a achevement,” and faulty sentence construction in “People can get house insurance if they have their own home if any kind of natural or sudden problems that may arise.” Punctuation and spacing also need attention. Practise accurate agreement, articles, and complete conditional sentences, then proofread each sentence for boundaries.
