IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Owning a home is very important in some countries instead of people who are paying a rent. In my opinion, it has more majority for positives than negatives. Staying in own house is better in some situations and it also have some darwbacks.

Firstly, if we paying a rent for someone in other countries to allow us to stay in their house. we need to pay high amount of accomendation to them in some countries. Based on the country rent should be depends, it helps for the people who are staying at high renting charge in countries instead of paying EMI to become a owner of their house. Secondly, Some people like to become a owner of a house with staying between their preferable furniture, painting colours, and greenery etc. Likewise, Owning a home better in some countries rather than paying a rents to stay. People who decide to stay long in their employement place with thier family without switching the company, it should be more helpful for them.

Finally, owning a home in other countries also has some drawbacks for who staying only for study. As a student we buy a house for staying until graduation, after graduation we leave from that place so it has that much of drawbacks for students to buy a house in study place. students need to leave from their after graduation, then they are plan to give their house to others for rent. They are not take care about rent house, how the owner treats precious about own house .

In conclusion, in some countries owning a house is better than paying rent for owners. Employees who are decide to stay long with family and same job in other country, it should benefit for them when they buy new home instead of paying rent. Along that it also have some drawbacks for owning a house in other country without staying a long in that country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both parts of the question: you suggest reasons for home ownership, including avoiding high rent, personalising a home, and staying near a long-term job, then identify a drawback for students who move after graduation. Your overall view is that ownership has more advantages, and this is also reflected in the conclusion. However, the position is not expressed clearly at the start, and the reasons are only partly explained. For example, the comparison between rent and “paying EMI” is difficult to follow, while the student example does not fully explain why renting would be preferable. State your position directly in the introduction and develop each reason with a clear explanation or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Finally” help show the intended structure. The main ideas are generally grouped by advantage and disadvantage. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear: the discussion moves from rent costs to furniture and then employment without explaining how the points connect. Some references, such as “it” and “that place,” are also unclear, and the conclusion repeats earlier points rather than bringing them together. Use clearer links between each claim and its explanation, and make pronoun references explicit so readers can follow the argument more easily.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “rent,” “owner,” “furniture,” “graduation,” and “drawbacks,” so the reader can identify the subject of the essay. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make ideas difficult to understand. Phrases such as “has more majority for positives,” “high renting charge,” and “precious about own house” are not natural in this context; spelling errors such as “accomendation” and “employement” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise set of housing-related expressions and check spelling and word forms. For example, use “the advantages outweigh the disadvantages” and “high rental costs” to express your meaning more clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, including conditional and relative clauses, as in “if we paying a rent” and “People who decide to stay long…”. However, many sentences contain errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, which sometimes make the meaning hard to follow. Examples include “it also have,” “if we paying,” and “it should be more helpful for them”; the lowercase “we” after a full stop also shows inconsistent punctuation. Practise building accurate basic clauses first, then extend them with subordinate clauses. Check subject–verb agreement and verb forms, such as “it also has” and “if we pay rent,” before adding more complex ideas.
