IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays, everyone wants to live in a peaceful and comfortable places which can be possible by owing a particular home. In this regard, renting a house is not as convenient as owing a house in several countries. I believe that it is a positive situation because having a home gives a lot of convenience and my viewpoints will be discussed in the following paragraphs.

If someone has his own residence, he can get the assurence of greater safety of his house with proper security. It costs a lot to build a house but it reduces the mental pressure of monthly payment for its rent. Moreover, house owners can decorate their houses based on their culture and interests. Subsequently, they can have greater freedom of renovate, relocate their living areas according to their preferences.

On the other hand, the cost of renting a house is very expensive to some of the countries around the world. This is one of the main drawbacks to live in a rental building. Furthermore, it fails to provide residential facilities such as - electricity and many more which is totally unbearable and it is completely absent in private palaces because houseowners have the alternative of electicity which is electricity generator system. Unfortunately, the proportion of house rents are increasing day by day in some countries although people are facing a lot of difficulties in rental houses.

In conclusion, it is necessary to own a house so that people can live without having any sorts of problems. The way rental costs are increasing gradually and residents are facing different obstacles in their daily lives, it is better to build a private house for living.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear opinion that home ownership is positive, and you offer relevant reasons, including greater security, freedom to decorate, and relief from recurring rent payments. However, the task asks both why owning a home is important and whether this is positive or negative; the reasons are only partly explained, and the discussion of rental costs and facilities does not always clarify why people value ownership. For example, the claim that rental housing lacks electricity is broad and confusing, while the generator point does not clearly support the comparison. Develop fewer points with specific explanations or examples, and make the link between each reason and your overall judgement explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the reader can follow the general position. Paragraphs broadly group related points, and transitions such as “Moreover” and “In conclusion” help signal movement. However, progression within the body paragraphs is uneven: the second paragraph shifts from rental costs to missing facilities and then rising rents, without clearly connecting these claims. “On the other hand” also suggests a contrast, although the paragraph continues to support your preference for ownership. Use topic sentences that state each paragraph’s main purpose, then order and link the supporting points more clearly; avoid transitions that imply a relationship the ideas do not have.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “residence,” “security,” “monthly payment,” and “preferences,” and you attempt less common expressions such as “mental pressure.” However, the range is limited by repeated use of “house,” “rent,” and “people,” and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate enough to make parts difficult to interpret. For instance, “private palaces” appears to mean privately owned homes, and “alternative of electicity” does not clearly express the intended idea. Spelling errors such as “assurence,” “owing,” and “electicity” also reduce precision. Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than more elaborate wording, and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional opening to a body point and a concluding clause beginning “so that.” The main message is generally understandable, but errors recur in agreement, articles, verb patterns and sentence construction. For example, “a peaceful and comfortable places” has a number mismatch, and “freedom of renovate” uses an incorrect grammatical pattern. In “the proportion of house rents are increasing,” the subject and verb do not agree, while the final sentence beginning “The way rental costs are increasing” is not formed as a complete, clear construction. Practise checking each sentence’s subject and verb, and use reliable patterns such as “freedom to renovate.”
