IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 4.5)

Some countries people prefer rented home rather than owning. We discuss this is a positive or negative pointes. Mostely business man prefer renting apatments.

Overall, City sided people want to renting home. Village sided people mostly prefer to buy own home. I think, this is a point to renting a home because, some scamer do scam and leave rented homes. Owning a home is a good point because, you live a tention free life such as every month tention free for rent problems and no risk to restigate there home. You will live a happy life with you family.

On the other side you will pay rent every month and always risk to restigate to home after not pay the rents. Mostly business man prefer this renting apartments, so they travel daily about there business and rentout the apartment and stay at night. Business man travel to daily routeen some time other city and some time other countries. Some people cant buy own home in the city because the price of homes is very high. Middle class shoul not afored this home, so they prefer renting a home.

Concluction, Renting home is very good option for a middel class because, They cant afoard a new home. Business man can afoard the own home but, Business issue force to renting home.Mostly cities should not have more rented homes available. In cities people live in rente aportments. Space issue is majer problem, So builder build an new buildings and rented the apartments to live more and more people here.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You attempt to address both why people rent and whether this is positive or negative, and you give a view that renting can be useful for people who cannot afford a home. The points about high city prices and business travel are relevant. However, the position is not consistently clear: the opening says people prefer renting, while the discussion also calls owning a home a good choice, and the conclusion shifts to saying cities should not have more rented homes. Several ideas are asserted rather than explained, such as the claim that businesspeople rent because they travel. To strengthen the response, state one clear overall judgement and develop each reason with a specific explanation or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has an introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion, and it uses basic signposts such as “Overall,” “On the other side” and “Concluction.” These help the reader recognise some changes in direction. However, the progression is difficult to follow because ideas about city and village residents, scams, business travel, affordability and building density are placed together without clear links. The conclusion introduces the claim that cities should not have more rented homes, which does not follow clearly from the earlier points. Some linking phrases are also used inaccurately or mechanically. Organise the essay around distinct reasons for renting, then discuss your judgement, and use clear references to show how each sentence connects to the previous one.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “rent,” “owning a home,” “price of homes” and “middle class,” so the main topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several spelling and word-choice errors make parts of the response difficult to understand, for example “scamer,” “restigate,” “afored” and “routeen.” Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “city sided people” and “rentout the apartment.” Aim to use accurate, common housing vocabulary before attempting more ambitious expressions. Check spelling carefully and learn phrases as units, such as “people living in cities,” “afford to buy a home” and “rental apartments,” to make your meaning clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt both short statements and longer sentences with reasons, for example “Some people cant buy own home in the city because the price of homes is very high.” This shows an effort to connect ideas, but the range remains limited and complex sentences are often faulty. Errors in sentence structure and verb forms occur throughout, as in “people prefer rented home rather than owning,” “want to renting home” and “Business man travel to daily routeen.” Articles, plurals and agreement are also frequently missing or inconsistent, and punctuation sometimes separates clauses incorrectly. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then join them with “because,” “although” or “so.” Proofread for subject–verb agreement, articles and consistent verb forms.
