IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In some countries, there is a tradition of people owning a home rather than rented home and it is considered very crucial amongst people. There are several aspects to this situation and this essay will cover both optimistic and pessimistic sides of it.
People often tend to buy their own house even with a loan. The reason for such attitude is stability, prestige and security. I personally believe this is for good intend, because when a person buys his/her own house, they have will a secure future. For instance, if someone is living in a rental house, they will be facing the issues of uncertainity of getting kicked out. Some of the landlords are unfair, asking for ridiculously high rents in a short notice. Also, buying a house is an investment because, population is increasing and the demand for land is also increasing. So the value of the land and house will always be high in future. Incase of resale in future, they will be getting a higher return than initial investment which provides the money stablilty. Other important factors are safety and privacy. People with own house will not have any restrictions and they will have shelter guaranteed.
However, there are also drawbacks because of this. People started seeing this as a symbol of their social status. Everyone started buying sprawling homes inorder to prove their social worth which sometimes results in a lot of debts. This is seen as competition of who has bigger house than their necessity. Hence this causes a lot hassle.
In conclusion, I believe having our own home is very necessary but we should be well planned iwth our financial resources.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both parts of the question: stability, security, prestige and investment are offered as reasons for home ownership, and you give a clear overall view that it is positive, while acknowledging debt and status competition as drawbacks. The examples about landlords and rising property values help explain your reasoning. This meets the task well, but some points are more fully developed than others. For example, the investment argument is explained, whereas the claim that owning a home provides “safety and privacy” is asserted without a specific explanation. The conclusion also says ownership is “very necessary” without balancing this against the financial risks discussed. Develop the less-supported reasons and make the final judgement more explicitly conditional to strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining reasons for ownership, a paragraph on drawbacks, and a conclusion. The progression from security and investment to social pressure is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “For instance,” “However,” and “In conclusion” guide the reader. Some cohesion is nevertheless mechanical or unclear. The introduction promises “both optimistic and pessimistic sides,” which is less direct than identifying the reasons and your position. In the main paragraph, several points are joined by repeated “Also” and “So,” making the sequence feel list-like. The reference in “This is seen as competition” could also be clearer. Use more precise links between claims and examples, and organise the reasons into a more deliberate progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic, including “stability,” “prestige,” “investment,” “uncertainity,” and “social status,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at less common or emphatic wording, such as “ridiculously high rents” and “sprawling homes.” However, some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “for good intend” does not express the intended meaning, “money stablilty” is not a natural collocation, and “causes a lot hassle” is incomplete. Spelling slips such as “uncertainity,” “inorder,” and “stablilty” also reduce control. Aim for accurate, natural collocations rather than adding emphasis, and proofread spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including conditional structures such as “if someone is living in a rental house” and a relative clause in “which provides the money stablilty.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “they have will a secure future” has an incorrect verb construction, and “People with own house” is missing an article. The sentence beginning “The reason for such attitude” also needs an article, while “because, population is increasing” has unnecessary punctuation and an article issue. There is some control of longer sentences, but accuracy is uneven. Check articles, verb forms and sentence boundaries, and revise complex sentences to ensure each clause is grammatically complete.
