IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In some countries, individuals believe that being a home owner is far much better than renting out.I agree with this statement.Though others hold onto a different opinion.
There is so much satisfaction that comes with being a property owner, one example is the confidence it gives one.It makes one have a strong belief in self that they are capable of achieving even more.Looking at the long and tedious process it takes to construct a home, from planning, execution and even the financial input. This takes a lot of discipline and effort hence builds up ones esteem and belief in self.
For other people, they prefer renting a home. This us considering the fact that it can be a cheaper and efficient way.For individuals living in big cities, house ownership can be so expensive. And moreover, factors such as noise, water and air pollution may not be favorable to contruct or buy homes for self so most end up prefering to be tenants.
In conclusion,I agree with owning a home rather than renting

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You give a clear view in favour of home ownership and offer relevant reasons, including the confidence associated with owning a property and the high costs and environmental drawbacks of buying in large cities. However, the task asks both why ownership is important in some countries and whether this is positive or negative. The response mainly explains personal confidence and briefly contrasts renting; it does not clearly explain why this preference is important in particular countries or develop the positive/negative judgement beyond stating agreement. The ideas are therefore limited and under-developed. The response is also below the required 250 words, which restricts how fully you can address and support both parts. Develop each reason with explanation or an example, and state explicitly why you consider the situation positive or negative.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph about ownership, a paragraph about renting, and a conclusion. This gives the reader a basic route through your ideas. However, progression is limited because the conclusion simply repeats your position, and the second body paragraph shifts to renting without clearly linking that contrast to your answer about why ownership matters. Some linking is mechanical or unclear, as in “And moreover,” and “This us considering the fact.” Improve cohesion by making each paragraph’s purpose explicit and using clear references to connect reasons to your overall judgement. Also ensure punctuation spacing is consistent, since missing spaces after commas make the text harder to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range to discuss the topic, including “property owner,” “financial input,” “discipline,” “efficient,” and “pollution.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and some vocabulary is relevant to housing and urban conditions. However, several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “renting out” when you mean renting a home, “far much better,” and “belief in self.” There are also spelling errors in “contruct” and “prefering.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the general message, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling; for example, use “renting a home,” “much better,” and “self-confidence.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the sentence beginning “Looking at the long and tedious process…” and the explanation of why city residents may rent. However, the range is limited, and some complex attempts are incomplete or faulty. “Though others hold onto a different opinion” is a fragment, while “Looking at the long and tedious process it takes to construct a home…” is also not a complete sentence. Other issues include “This us considering” and the unclear agreement and reference in “they are capable.” Commas are frequently joined directly to the next word, and the conclusion lacks a full stop. Build complete sentences around introductory phrases, and check verb forms, sentence boundaries, and punctuation.
