IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, many people are owning home rather than renting one in many countries. This is because many people feel stressed about rents and they cannot build their home according to their preference. From my perspective, I believe it is a positive development because it offers long-term benefits.

On the one hand, the major reason many people believe that renting home is so stressful. The reason behind it is they have to pay half of their salaries for rents as homes are much expensive nowadays. For example, an old man who retired from occupation have to pay his rent from the pensions. As a result, they cannot save money for future and have to pay rent lifelong. Another reason is their comfart. A substantial proportion of people want to build their homes according to their preference. By living on rent they cannot build the home because it is not their property.

On the other hand, I believe it is positive development because it provides mental stablity. Although buying home could be expensive, people are less woried about paying rents. Not only people feel more comfartable at their personal property, but also feel more safe and less stressful. For example, people living in their own property are less stressful about rents rather than people living in rents. Moreover, owning a property would be beneficial in future. The prices of land and apartment are increasing day by day. If people sell their home, they can get a lot of money by selling the home comparing to their investments. As a result, it is beneficial if it is a long-term investment.

In conclusion, although renting home is cheaper than buying one, I believe owning home is a positive development as it provides financial benefits and mental-stablity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the prompt: you explain why people prefer ownership, citing rent costs and limited freedom to personalise a rented home, and you clearly judge ownership to be positive. Your reasons for this view—greater security and possible financial gain—are relevant, and the examples help make the response understandable. The discussion is not equally developed throughout, however. The point about retirees paying rent is introduced but not explored, and the claim that selling a home brings better returns than other investments is asserted rather than supported or qualified. To strengthen the response, explain these ideas more precisely and distinguish the benefits of ownership from the costs and risks involved in buying.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining why people want to own homes, a paragraph presenting your positive view, and a conclusion that restates it. The progression from reasons to evaluation is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “Moreover” help guide the reader. Some linking is mechanical or repetitive, particularly the repeated references to rent and stress, and the example in the second body paragraph largely repeats the preceding claim rather than adding a distinct point. A few references, such as “they” after “an old man,” are not fully clear. Use more varied links and make each example extend the point it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “long-term benefits,” “mental stability,” “personal property,” and “investment,” and the main ideas remain understandable. However, the range and control are uneven, with repeated basic words such as “home,” “rent,” and “people,” and several inaccurate or misspelled forms. Examples include “comfart,” “stablity,” “woried,” and “mental-stablity”; these errors make the writing look less controlled. Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “pay rents,” “living in rents,” and “comparing to their investments.” Build a more precise set of housing-related expressions and check spelling and collocations carefully. This would allow you to express the same ideas more naturally and flexibly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including “Although buying home could be expensive” and “If people sell their home, they can get a lot of money.” These show an effort to vary sentence forms, and the overall meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain, especially with articles, agreement, and verb forms. For example, “owning home” needs an article, “the major reason … is” is missing a clear clause structure, and “an old man … have to pay” has a subject–verb agreement error. The opening “many people are owning” is also an awkward tense choice for a general trend. Review article use and agreement, and edit each sentence for a complete, correctly formed clause while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
