IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In several countries of the world, people prefer buying a home instead of renting one. Because owning a home in some countries is often seen as a form of financial stability and social status. I think that it is a positive situation because they don't have to worry about rent every month and owning a home increases the chances of settelment.

Owning a home is widely considered as a symbol of financial securtiy and social status in some parts of the world. Only the person who is financially independent and can afford a huge amount of investment is able to buy a home. By owning a home people don't have to pay rent every month and they gain freedon from one of the major expenditures out of monthly income. For instance, in Pakistan a home owner enjoy more out of his life and avoid rent related problems which are common here.

I firmly believe that this is a very postive situation to buy a home instead of renting one. Firstly, owning a home itself is an investment which compounds every year and overall assest value increases over time. It can also act as a form of emergency fund which can be sold and the capital can be used in difficult situations such as medical and other emergencies. Secondly, it is also supporting national economy indirectly by flowing money into real estate. Consequently, it can save people from crisis as well as give them comfort.

In conclusion, buying a home is very suitable for individuals in some countries. I believe that it gives individuals a more financially stable and high status life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question: you explain home ownership through financial security and social status, and clearly state that you see it as positive. The points about avoiding monthly rent and using a property as an asset are relevant, with the Pakistan example adding some support. This meets the task well overall, but the reasons people prioritise ownership are less fully explored than the benefits you list. For example, the claim that a home can be sold to fund emergencies needs qualification, since selling may take time and is not always practical. To strengthen the response further, develop the causes behind this preference and explain the limits or conditions of your supporting claims.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining why ownership matters, a paragraph supporting your positive view, and a conclusion. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “In conclusion” help readers identify the stages of your argument. However, some links feel mechanical, and the opening sentence of the first body paragraph repeats the introduction’s point about financial security and status. The sentence beginning “Because owning a home…” is also left as a fragment, which interrupts the flow between ideas. Use more varied transitions and connect each supporting example directly to the claim it illustrates; this would make the organisation feel more seamless.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “financial stability,” “social status,” “investment,” “emergency fund,” and “national economy.” These choices communicate your main ideas, and some topic-specific language helps the response sound relevant. However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural combinations reduce accuracy, including “sett elment” (written as “settelment”), “freedon,” “assest,” and “a home owner enjoy.” Phrases such as “huge amount of investment” and “flowing money into real estate” could also be expressed more naturally and precisely. Aim to check spelling carefully and learn common collocations, such as “make a substantial investment” and “support the property market.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the relative clause in “which are common here” and the conditional-style explanation of how a property may help in an emergency. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. “Because owning a home…” is a dependent clause presented as a complete sentence; join it to the preceding sentence or recast it. There are also agreement and article problems in “a home owner enjoy” and “the capital can be used,” where the reference to capital could be clearer. Practise complete sentence construction, subject–verb agreement, and article use, then proofread each sentence for these patterns.
