IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In some countries many people prefer to own the house rather than rent one. This is because owning house give financial stabelity and residential security. I beleive this is positive situation because owning a house is good for all of us.

There are several reasons about why people consider owning the house. People do not face any financial issue due to owning the house. With passage of time the rent of houses are increase in all over the world. So it is very difficult for all of us to pay the rent of house. There are. massive growth in population. As a result demand of houses are also increase specially in cities. Goverment need to give many oppertunities that help us to buy the house. I think there is no taste of life if we do not have any house.

In my openion, this is positive situation. This is our basic needs to have a house. All the people that do not have house face many financial issue, So goverment need to pay a lone to person that do not have enough money to buy house. He give this money to goverment in the form of episodes. This is easy for all of us. It make our house and also help us to pay the goverment loan.

In conclusion, some people prefer to own house because it give security and financial support. We also decorate the house according to our our own choice. In house we also make a garden that make our body healthy, so there are many benefits of owning house.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You answer both parts of the question: you suggest that home ownership offers “financial stability” and “residential security,” and you clearly state that you see it as positive. However, the reasons are only partly developed. Rising rents and population growth are relevant, but the link between population growth and the preference to own is not fully explained. The claim that “there is no taste of life” without a house is broad, and the proposed government loan scheme is introduced without explaining how it addresses the reasons people value ownership. To strengthen the response, explain each reason with a specific consequence or example, and make the positive effects more precise rather than relying on general claims.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate body paragraphs and a conclusion. Basic signposting such as “As a result” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the main direction. However, progression within paragraphs is uneven: the discussion moves from rising rents to population growth, then to government opportunities and the value of having a home, without clearly connecting each point. Some linking is repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “So” and “also,” and references such as “This is easy for all of us” do not make the intended idea clear. Group related reasons together and use more precise links to show cause and effect; this would make the overall argument easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “financial stability,” “residential security,” “population” and “demand.” These choices communicate the general subject, but the range is limited and several phrases are inaccurate or unnatural, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to interpret. For example, “the rent of houses are increase” and “pay the government in the form of episodes” do not express the intended ideas clearly. Spelling errors such as “stabelity,” “beleive,” “Goverment” and “oppertunities” also reduce accuracy. Build a bank of natural housing-related collocations and check spelling, word forms and meaning. More precise vocabulary would help you explain the financial and personal benefits without relying on repeated general terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

Most sentences use simple structures, and you attempt some cause-and-effect links with “because,” “so” and “as a result.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently in basic sentence patterns, sometimes making the message hard to follow. Examples include “owning house give,” “the rent of houses are increase,” and “demand of houses are also increase,” where articles, agreement and verb forms are not controlled. There are also problems with sentence boundaries, as in “There are. massive growth,” and with pronoun reference in “He give this money.” Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, articles and verb forms first, then combine ideas into longer sentences while checking that each clause is complete.
