IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In some countries there are actually some house owners who prefer to have their own houses rather than renting any and that has some reasons that needs to be identified.

I opine, this is actually a positive decision which creates similar situation from many angels. This essay will discuss about why this can be both positive and negative at the same time as well.

Owning house instead of renting others properties can be very challgening sometimes as the liability falls upon on the tenants if any damage has been done unintentionally. For example, in Canada, the tenants always have to sign leases which varies from owner to owner but same for every tenants with different rules and regulations.Tenants also have to pay the damage deposits which can sometimes be as equal as one month's rent and this can be very difficult for tenants with lower incomes or the ones with bigger families. In canada there are very few owners who rent their full houses instead they usually rent out their basements or upper floors to the tenants and share houses or apartments with other familes. This can trigger a lot of discomforts for both the tenants and owners.

On the other hand, owning a house or an apartment are always something that protects peace of minds and personal spaces for people who are not very good at sharing spaces with anyone. This applies to every owners from anywhere in the world. It also comes with it's own issues as well as owning properties can be very expensive and perhaps the installments can be overwhelming for anyone if the income is not setteled.

In conclusion,I think it's a better choice to have own properties rather than living and sharing personal spaces with others as this can bring both discomfort and legal issues if not maintained properly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear overall view that owning a home is preferable, and you mention relevant considerations such as privacy, shared accommodation, deposits and the financial burden of ownership. However, the task asks why home ownership is important in some countries, and this part is not directly explained: the discussion focuses more on renting’s disadvantages than on cultural, financial or security reasons people value ownership. The positive/negative evaluation is also uneven. You call ownership positive, but introduce a negative side without clearly deciding how it affects your overall judgement. Develop the reasons for its importance and explain why the benefits outweigh—or do not outweigh—the costs to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has an introduction, a main discussion and a conclusion, and phrases such as “For example” and “On the other hand” signal relationships between ideas. However, the overall progression is difficult to follow because the first body paragraph begins with the challenges of owning a house, then shifts to tenants’ leases and shared accommodation. The contrast between ownership and renting is therefore not consistently organised. Some linking is also mechanical, and the conclusion introduces “legal issues” without developing this point earlier. Give each body paragraph one clear purpose—such as reasons people value ownership, followed by drawbacks—and use references and transitions that make the connection between examples and your position explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant housing vocabulary, including “leases,” “damage deposits,” “personal spaces” and “installments,” which helps communicate the topic. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear, such as “creates similar situation from many angels,” “protects peace of minds” and “the income is not setteled.” Spelling errors such as “challgening,” “familes” and “setteled” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise expressions and check spelling carefully; for example, describe ownership as providing “privacy and security” rather than “protects peace of minds.” This would make your ideas easier to understand and give the vocabulary a more natural academic tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “which” and “as,” but control is inconsistent. Errors occur in agreement and sentence structure: “some reasons that needs to be identified,” “owning a house or an apartment are,” and “the tenants always have to sign leases which varies.” Articles and possessives are also problematic in “have own properties” and “it's own issues.” Several sentences run together without appropriate spacing or punctuation, making the relationships between ideas harder to follow. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, articles and sentence boundaries, then build complex sentences around one main idea at a time. More accurate control would make your argument clearer.
