IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is widely beleived that countries owning a house is more essential than the renting a house for the people. I think in this case owning a house gives more positives or advantages than an renting house becuase ownind a house can cut off the comparises which are done in rented homes.

There are several reasons behind this phenomenon the owned house can have their dreamed infrastructure can also complete their needs like water usage, owning a pet etc. This is because rented people need to srvive the situations and the rule they get in rented house they may get lots of problem. For Instance, In rented houses they may not allow pets to have in home because they needed to maintain the home safely things are totally different the owned homes.

On the other hand, owned people can get savings option their is no cost of living and they can also rent the other portions in the owned houses which gives the profits from them. In rented houses we may needed to pay fee in different aspects like living cost, electricity bill, water bill and also maintance bill like they many to pay. where in this situation it is better to own a house rather than renting a house.

In conclusion, owning is more important than thw renting a house for the people who are in middle class. I think this the best cj

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address both parts of the question: you suggest that ownership allows people to personalise a home and keep pets, and you argue that owning is preferable because it can reduce ongoing costs or generate rental income. However, the response only partially develops these points. The explanation of why home ownership is important in some countries is not clearly distinguished from your opinion that it is positive, and the conclusion narrows the claim to “people who are in middle class” without explaining why. The final sentence is also incomplete, leaving your position unfinished. The response is 15 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to explain and support your ideas. Develop each reason with a clear explanation or example and complete the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and phrases such as “For Instance” and “On the other hand” signal relationships between ideas. However, progression within paragraphs is often difficult to follow. For example, the first body paragraph moves from home infrastructure to water and pets, then to rules for tenants without clearly connecting these points. The contrast introduced by “On the other hand” is also unclear because the paragraph continues comparing ownership and renting rather than presenting a distinct opposing view. Some sentences run together, and the unfinished ending interrupts the overall flow. Use one main point per paragraph, connect explanations explicitly, and check that each linking phrase accurately describes the relationship between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “rented houses,” “maintain,” “savings,” and “profits,” so the reader can identify the main subject and several supporting ideas. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make meaning unclear, such as “cut off the comparises,” “srvive the situations,” and “owned house can have their dreamed infrastructure.” Spelling errors, including “beleived,” “becuase,” and “maintance,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural phrases rather than translating ideas word by word: for example, explain that owners can “customise their homes” or that tenants may face “restrictions.” Proofread spelling and choose vocabulary that expresses the intended meaning directly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a reason clause beginning “This is because” and a relative clause in “the rule they get in rented house.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make several sentences difficult to understand. For example, “countries owning a house is more essential” has an unclear subject and agreement, while “they may not allow pets to have in home” has an incomplete grammatical pattern. Articles and plurals are also inconsistent, as in “an renting house” and “owned homes.” Punctuation is unreliable, particularly where separate ideas are joined without a full stop. Practise building accurate subject–verb sentences first, then add subordinate clauses and check articles, agreement and sentence boundaries.
