IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Man through the ages has been gone through so many changes of life when he depicted a herd of mammoths to the walls of his cave to the life when he could able to live in a well and fully furnished home. Man is a social animal and he always adores to adopt the lifestyles of other people. According to my perspective it is a positive situation to move forward.

Firstly, I would try to elaborate and defend my stance with some reasons and experiences. While strictly speaking as far as myself is concerned. Particularly in Aisa, Pakistan and India are always remained the two main dominating countries whose first priority is to owning a home than to rent it. It can have a lot of advantages. Usually, when people owns more than one or two home, they always try to give their other homes to people at rent and this step can be a turning point for them.

Because rent coming from the homes can support their budget. By this way, they can able to uplift their fiscal situation. Although, owning a home can save us from wasting a massive amount of money from giving a monthly rent to someone for living in his house. And very rarely people can have the worst experience of their life by meeting with a cruel home master.

Here I want to share my life expericence. In my college era I have to take a home at rent just because for my access. But by God, the home master was so ruthless to me. There were numerous problems in it's kitchen, balcony and living area which irritated me a lot. I called him thousand times to make them comfortable for me for god sake. But he did not even listen to me so I fed up and decided to leave that home.

In conclusion, I would say that the countries who prefer to live in their own home is absolutely exquisite and a positive opinion for the ones who can buy them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear overall view that home ownership is positive, and you offer relevant reasons, including avoiding rent and having greater control over the condition of a home. The personal account of an unresponsive landlord also illustrates a disadvantage of renting. However, the task asks both why owning a home is important in some countries and whether this is positive or negative. The explanation of why this preference is especially strong in Pakistan and India is brief, and the claim that people imitate others does not explain the cultural or practical reasons clearly. Some points, such as earning rent from additional properties, are not fully connected to the question. Develop the country-specific reasons and explain more directly who benefits and whether ownership is positive overall.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has an introduction, several body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the ideas about rent, landlords and personal experience are generally relevant. However, progression is uneven: the opening historical comparison and the statement about copying other people do not lead clearly into the main explanation. Linking phrases such as “Firstly,” “Because,” and “Although” are sometimes used mechanically or create incomplete connections; for example, “Because rent coming from the homes can support their budget” is left as a fragment. The personal story is understandable but takes up space without being clearly tied back to the broader argument. Organise the body around distinct reasons, use complete transitions, and make each paragraph’s link to the position explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of vocabulary, including “fiscal situation,” “dominating countries,” and “ruthless,” and the reader can usually understand your intended meaning. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “depicted a herd of mammoths to the walls” appears to mean painted mammoths on cave walls, while “home master” and “take a home at rent” are not natural expressions. There are also spelling and word-form errors, such as “Aisa” and “expericence.” Some phrases, including “positive opinion” and “exquisite” to describe a preference, do not express the intended idea clearly. Prioritise accurate, natural collocations for housing and ownership, and check spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “While” and “Although,” but control is inconsistent. Errors in verb forms and agreement occur in phrases such as “has been gone through,” “he could able to live,” and “people owns.” Some sentences are incomplete or awkwardly joined, notably “Because rent coming from the homes can support their budget,” while “While strictly speaking as far as myself is concerned” is also a fragment. Tense shifts in the personal account (“I have to take” followed by “I called”) make the timeline less controlled, and punctuation sometimes obscures sentence boundaries. Practise complete clause structures, consistent past-tense narration, and subject–verb agreement before adding more complex constructions.
