IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Many people believe that it is necessary to own a home rather than renting because it provides security for future and helps in savings. In my opinion it is a postive development this essay will discuss abou the importance of owning a house.

The first and the foremost reason why many people press on buying a property because it provides financial security for people, for instance, if a person losses his/her job then it would be difficult for them to pay their monthly rent, in contrast, owning a property gives them security by ensuring hosuing facility even after any uncertainities realted to work or health.

Another important reason is that owning a house saves alot of expenses, instead of monthly expenditure on housing a person can utilize their money for future development like establishing a new bussiness or company. For example, a person can take a loan on their existing property and expand it further for new company or bussiness, development basically it provides flexibility to explore new possibilites for everyone.

In conlusion, I firmly believe that it is really important to own a house as it provides freedom and secures future at the time of uncertainity. So it is a positive development.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both parts of the question: you give reasons for the importance of home ownership and state clearly that you see it as positive. The points about security if someone loses a job and using property to support a business are relevant. However, the response is under the required 250 words, and this limits how fully you can explain and support your ideas. The claim that ownership “saves alot of expenses” is not sufficiently qualified, since owners may also face mortgage payments and maintenance costs. Your view is clear, but the positive effects are asserted more than explored. Develop each reason with fuller explanation and a specific example, and consider acknowledging a limitation before explaining why you still regard ownership as beneficial.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion that restates your position. This makes the overall progression easy to follow. You also use signposting such as “Another important reason” and “In conclusion.” However, some linking is mechanical, and the first sentence of the introduction runs together: “this essay will discuss abou the importance…” The second body paragraph also packs several ideas—saving expenses, future development, loans, and business expansion—into one long sequence, so the relationship between them is not always clear. Use clearer sentence boundaries and explain one main point at a time. More precise referencing would also help readers follow who “them” and “it” refer to.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “financial security,” “monthly rent,” “property,” and “flexibility,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts to use more specific expressions, such as “uncertainties related to work or health.” However, spelling errors and inaccurate or unnatural combinations are noticeable, including “postive,” “hosuing,” “alot,” “bussiness,” and “possibilites.” Some phrases are also imprecise: “saves a lot of expenses” and “housing facility” do not sound natural in this context. Aim to check spelling carefully and learn common collocations as complete phrases. A more precise range would help you explain financial benefits and risks without relying on broad terms such as “future development.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a conditional example: “if a person losses his/her job then it would be difficult…” This shows some range, and the main message remains understandable. However, some sentence structures and punctuation need more control. The opening paragraph contains a run-on sentence joining your opinion to “this essay will discuss,” and the first body paragraph has an incomplete or awkward construction: “The first and the foremost reason… because…” The sentence beginning “For example” also joins several ideas without clear punctuation. Review sentence boundaries, clause structure, and verb forms; for instance, use “loses” rather than “losses” in the conditional. Building accurate complex sentences before adding more clauses will make your reasoning clearer.
