IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, Owining a house is very important for many people in some countries. many people prefer to buy their own homes instead of renting them. There are several reasons for this, and i believe this is a positive situation.

There are many reasons why people want to own a house. Firstly, having their own house gives people a sense of security and freedom. They do not need to worry about paying monthly rent or moving to another bplace because of the landlord. Secondly, buying a house is a good investment for the future. The value of property may increase overtime, which can provide financial benefits. Moreover, people can decorate and change their houses according to their own wishes.

In my opinion, This is a positive situation becausae owning a home provides stability and comfort. for instance, families who have their own houses can live peacefully without worrying about increasing rental prices. it also gives people a feeling of the biggest goals in life. However, purchasing a house can be expensive, and some people may financial pressure because of loans and other costs.

In conclusion, people prefer to own homes because of security, freedom and also financial benefits. Although buying a house can be costly, I believe that it is a positive situation because it provides long-term stability and better future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you give reasons for home ownership, including security, freedom, investment, and the ability to personalise a home, and you clearly judge it to be positive. The examples about avoiding rent increases and having stability are relevant. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: for example, the claim that property values may rise is not developed, and the idea that owning a home is “a feeling of the biggest goals in life” is unclear. The response is also 32 words below the required minimum, so there is less space to develop and support your ideas. Explain the reasons in more depth and clarify how the drawbacks affect your overall view.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining reasons, a paragraph giving your evaluation, and a conclusion. The progression from reasons to your positive position is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “Moreover,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. To make the organisation more effective, develop the links between ideas rather than relying mainly on these sequence markers. For instance, connect the investment point to the long-term stability discussed later. The contrast introduced by “However” is relevant, but its effect on your overall judgement could be explained more clearly. Consistent paragraphing and clearer links between supporting details would strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for the topic, including “sense of security,” “good investment,” “financial benefits,” and “long-term stability.” These phrases communicate the main ideas, but the range is not always precise or natural. Expressions such as “a feeling of the biggest goals in life” and “financial pressure” are awkward or incomplete, while “owning a house” and “buying a house” are repeated frequently. There are also spelling and typing errors, including “Owining,” “bplace,” and “becausae,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully; using alternatives such as “homeownership” and “financial strain” would help make the vocabulary more flexible and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and some complex forms, including “Although buying a house can be costly” and the relative clause “which can provide financial benefits.” Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical and punctuation errors persist. For example, “some people may financial pressure” is missing a verb, and “families who have their own houses can live peacefully” would benefit from a more precise sentence structure. Capitalisation is inconsistent after full stops, as in “many people” and “for instance,” and commas are sometimes missing or misplaced. Practise checking sentence boundaries, verb completeness, and punctuation, while continuing to use subordinate clauses to show relationships between ideas.
