IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
It is a fact that in many countries owning a home rather than renting a house is very important for people. This prefrence is driven by the cultural and financial factor. In my opinion it is a positive development with some drawbacks.
To begin with, homeownership is very significant. Firstly, it gives a sense of stability and security. The rented house is vacuated by landlord and the rent increases evey year and own house families permanently shifted and many parents avoid the stress of shifting so they buy their own house. Another reason is that houseownership is a sign of financial stability. A house is seen as financial investment. when people have their own house they feel relaxed and safe. These days owning a house linked to social status and success.
Moreover, homeownership gives people financial security in old age. Once the loan is paid, they do not have to worry about monthly rent after retirement. It also encourages saving and responsible financial planning, as people work hard to pay off their mortgage. However, there is a negative side. In cities like Lahore or Sahiwal, property prices are now so high that young people have to take huge loans and are under financial pressure for 20-30 years. This can lead to stress and prevent them from taking risks in their professional lives, such as starting a business.
In conclusion , owning a house is very crucial because people value it as a emotional safety and financial benefits. So, it is a positive development.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address both parts of the prompt: cultural and financial reasons for preferring ownership, and a clear view that it is positive despite drawbacks. The points about stability, social status, investment, and security in retirement are relevant, while the example of young people taking large loans in Lahore or Sahiwal gives your discussion some concrete support. Your position remains consistent in the introduction and conclusion. To strengthen the response further, develop the reasons more precisely: for example, explain how cultural expectations shape people’s choices, rather than simply stating that ownership is linked to status. The drawbacks are also less fully explored than the benefits, so clarify how long-term debt may affect people beyond limiting career risks.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining reasons for ownership, a paragraph balancing benefits with a drawback, and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “Firstly,” and “Moreover” help readers follow the main points, and the contrast introduced by “However” is appropriate. This gives the essay a coherent progression. However, some links feel mechanical, particularly the repeated listing of reasons, and several ideas within the first body paragraph are crowded together. The connection between rising rent, landlords ending tenancies, and families buying homes could be made more explicit. Use clearer referencing and vary transitions so that relationships between ideas, rather than just their order, are consistently apparent.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “homeownership,” “financial investment,” “retirement,” “mortgage,” and “financial pressure.” These terms help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “a sense of stability and security” and “social status and success.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “the rented house is vacuated by landlord,” “houseownership,” and “own house families permanently shifted.” Spelling errors such as “prefrence,” “evey,” and “vacated” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural combinations such as “tenants may be asked to leave” and check spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “Once the loan is paid, they do not have to worry about monthly rent” and a relative clause in “a negative side.” The main message is usually understandable, but some errors in sentence structure, articles, agreement, and punctuation remain. For example, “The rented house is vacuated by landlord and the rent increases” has an unclear construction and needs an article before “landlord”; “when people have their own house” should begin with a capital letter after the full stop; and “owning a house linked to social status” is missing a verb. Improve control by checking each sentence for a complete subject and verb, and use punctuation to separate ideas cleanly.
