IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In many cities of the world, individuals buy their own home for living rather than renting apartment or homes. It has positive impact on people who lived in their personal residences. I firmly agree with this statement and it is a positive situation.
On the one hand, residents prefer to live in their personal residences because they have excessive facilities in their homes. They feel independent and no burden of the payment of rent. In addition, they renovate their houses when they want and add things in their homes. When they live in their homes, they feel comfort. They invite relatives in their homes and spend quality time with them. This situation is happened because individuals feel more comfort in their homes and they have feeling about loss of property. Therefore, they prefer to live in their personal residences and enjoy to live there.
On the other hand, this case is happened due to personal property. People feel safe in their personal homes. In case of renting houses, they need to pay excessive amount of rent and they enjoy less facilities. For instance, they have no allows to renovate their houses and add other things in homes because they have to survive on the given things. Consequently, they fell dependent and not enjoy more facilities.
In conclusion, it has benefits to buy your own home and lived in their. People can enjoy all the things and lived there with the happiness. it also has benefical for their lives and they spend time with their

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You give a clear view that owning a home is positive, and you offer relevant reasons, including independence, freedom to renovate, comfort, and avoiding rent. These points address both why ownership matters and whether it is positive. However, the explanation is repetitive and some ideas remain unclear or insufficiently supported. For example, “they have excessive facilities” does not explain what facilities are meant, while “feeling about loss of property” is difficult to interpret. The discussion of renting mainly repeats that tenants pay rent and have fewer freedoms, rather than developing the wider reasons home ownership is important in some countries. Explain these reasons more precisely and support them with a specific example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and phrases such as “On the one hand,” “In addition,” and “For instance” help signal relationships between points. However, the overall progression is limited: the two body paragraphs overlap, as both contrast ownership with renting and repeat ideas about comfort, facilities and independence. Some links are also unclear, particularly “This situation is happened because…” and “Consequently,” where the connection to the preceding point is not fully explained. The conclusion is incomplete and does not bring the argument to a clear close. Organise each paragraph around a distinct reason, develop that reason in sequence, and use referencing that makes the links between sentences explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the general subject, including “rent,” “renovate,” “independent,” and “personal residences.” However, the range is limited and several phrases are repeated, especially “personal residences,” “homes,” and “facilities.” Some word choices or combinations are inaccurate and make meaning less clear: “excessive facilities,” “feel comfort,” and “enjoy to live there” are not natural expressions in this context. There are also spelling and word-form problems, such as “benefical” and “fell” where the intended meaning appears to be “feel.” Build a more precise range for discussing housing, security and financial commitment, and check that words combine naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including clauses introduced by “because,” “when” and “in case,” but control is inconsistent. Errors occur frequently in verb forms and sentence construction, as in “This situation is happened,” “they have no allows,” and “buy your own home and lived in their.” There are also problems with articles, agreement and sentence boundaries; for example, “rather than renting apartment or homes” needs more accurate article and number forms, and the final sentence is unfinished. These errors sometimes make the intended meaning difficult to follow. Practise accurate present-tense forms and complete sentence patterns first, then use subordinate clauses while checking each sentence for a clear subject, verb and ending.
