IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

IN SOME REGIONS PURCHASING A HOUSE IS HIGHLY IMPORTANT FOR CITIZENS than HAVING it ON RENT. FROM MY perspective this is due to the increasing rents of the houses and the behaviour of the land lords. I firmly believe that this is a highly positive situation.

Firstly, indivisuals prefer their own houses than renting one because the rents of houses in several regions have increased significantly in recent years. Nowadays, the rent it self has became a burden that people have to pay at end of every month, whereas buying a house is a life time investment and their is nothing to pay after that one purchase. For Instance,a family prefers to buy a house by collective contribution of each member and get rid from the monthly burden that they had to pay otherwise. Therefore, high rents encouraged people to purchase their own houses instead of living in a rented house.

In addition, due to the rude and insulting behaviour of the land lords people prefer to buy their own house. Every citizen of a country in repectable, yet the owners of the houses do not keep this in mind and disrespect people who lives in their houses with or without any reanson as they know that people are dependent on them. For example a person living along with his family might faces some disrespectful arguments from the house owner on delaying the rent for one or two days. Thus, this rude behaviour of land lords forces people to buy their own house and live respectfully. I strongly consider this as a positive initiative that has been taken by several citizens.

In conclusion, people prefer purchasing their own house than living in a rented house because of the increase in rents and rude behaviour of land lords. I firmly consider this as a significant initiative taken by many people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you give two reasons for home ownership—rising rents and landlords’ behaviour—and clearly state that you see this as positive. The examples about monthly payments and a family facing disrespect from a landlord make the response relevant. However, the explanation of why buying is positive is less fully developed than the reasons people choose to buy. For instance, calling it a “life time investment” is not explained in terms of security, financial benefits, or control over one’s home, and the conclusion mainly repeats the earlier points. Develop the positive/negative judgement with a clearer explanation of its effects, and qualify broad claims such as “there is nothing to pay” after a purchase, since owners still face costs such as maintenance and taxes.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion. Sequencing is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “In addition,” and “In conclusion” help the reader identify each stage. This meets the lower-band expectation for coherent organisation and also shows some stronger control through paragraphing and a logical progression. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical because several sentences rely on “Therefore,” “Thus,” and repeated references to “buy their own house.” Some links also make the reasoning feel repetitive rather than extended. To strengthen progression, use pronouns or precise paraphrases to refer back to ideas, and make the connection between each example and the positive judgement more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “monthly burden,” “life time investment,” “disrespectful arguments,” and “dependent on them.” However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems are noticeable. Examples include “prefer their own houses than renting one,” “get rid from,” “land lords,” and “repectable”; these reduce naturalness and sometimes make the reader pause, although the overall meaning remains clear. Aim for more accurate housing-related collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully. Repeating “house,” “buy,” and “rude behaviour” also limits flexibility; use suitable alternatives such as “property,” “purchase,” and “discourteous treatment” where appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “whereas,” and “as,” and the main message is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “the rent it self has became” should use the correct past participle, while “people who lives” has a subject–verb agreement problem. In “a person … might faces,” the modal should be followed by the base form, and “a family prefers to buy … and get” needs more consistent grammatical construction. Punctuation and capitalisation are also inconsistent. Review these patterns and proofread each sentence, while continuing to use complex clauses.
