IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is true that few countries in the world renting a home is very essential rather than buying. There are a variety of reasons responsible for it. I strongly think that it is a positive situation.

There are a number of reasons why people renting a home rather than buying it. One possible reason is that people don't have the enough money to buy a home. A large number of people in the world who suffer for money. In many countries the people lead a ordinary llife. They earn money but cannot save it because of high expentitue. Therefore, they cannot affort to buy a home. Another reason is high ammount of tax. There are lots of countries in the world who are taken big ammount of tax from landlords. Sometimes landlords donot able to give tax in a proper time, that is the reason why people donot owning a home.

this is a positve sutation for a large number of people. Firstly, by renting a home people donot worry about huge ammount of government tax, because they are not the owner of the land. They can freely live there without paying tax, main responsibility is for land's owner. Secondly, a large number of people earn a small ammout of money, if they want buy a home they have to earn more money and it will give them a mental pressure. Rather than owning a home they can easily live in a rent house with a small income. Moreover, If someone want to buy a home, then will go to a complicated process.

In conclusion, although some factors dependable for this, but I believe it have some positive scenario.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You state a clear view—“I strongly think that it is a positive situation”—and give reasons related to affordability and avoiding the responsibilities of ownership. However, the response only partially addresses the prompt because its opening reverses the central issue: the question asks why owning a home is important, while you write that renting is “very essential rather than buying.” The explanation about landlords paying tax also does not clearly explain why people value owning a home, and the conclusion does not resolve this mismatch. Develop the reasons people prefer ownership, such as security, investment, or cultural expectations, then explain your positive or negative judgement with specific support. Your position is present, but the ideas remain limited and under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, a paragraph giving reasons, a paragraph explaining your positive view, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Moreover” help signal the points. However, progression is weakened by the mismatch between the prompt’s focus on owning and your discussion of renting, and some links between claims are unclear. For example, the sentence about landlords being unable to pay tax does not clearly lead to the claim that people therefore do not own homes. The conclusion is also very brief and does not summarise the main reasoning. Use topic sentences that directly answer each part of the question, and make the relationship between each example and your argument explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use a basic range of topic vocabulary, including “renting,” “buy a home,” “tax,” “income,” and “mental pressure,” so the general subject is usually understandable. There are also attempts to express cause and consequence, such as “because of high expentitue” and “it will give them a mental pressure.” However, vocabulary is repetitive and several inaccurate word choices or spellings make meaning less clear: “few countries” does not fit the intended generalisation, “landlords” appears where the meaning seems to be homeowners, and “positive sutation” is misspelled. Some phrases, including “ordinary llife” and “small ammout of money,” are also imprecise. Build a more accurate range for discussing ownership, security, costs, and social expectations, and check spelling and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a conditional idea in “if they want buy a home they have to earn more money,” and use connectors to join reasons. However, control is inconsistent, and errors in sentence structure and verb forms frequently make the reader work to understand the point. Examples include “people renting a home” instead of a correctly formed clause, “the people lead a ordinary life,” “countries … who are taken big amount of tax,” and “I believe it have.” Articles, agreement, and infinitive forms also need attention: write “an ordinary life,” “countries that charge,” and “if they want to buy.” Practise accurate basic clauses first, then add complex structures while checking subject–verb agreement and verb patterns.
