IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
It is widely considerable debate to own a home rather than renting one for people nowadays. In my opinion, it is a negative situation, although owning a home had many benefits rather that renting one but the disadvantages outweights the advantages.
Begining with my main arguement, the first key point is that owing a home is highly expensive. People earn very hard to meet basic necessities of life.To get your own home is not budget friendly nowadays that a middle class man could afford the land and then the construction of a home. For instance, a couple of years back I won a lottery and decided to build my own home but after getting information for the cost to build a two bedroom house, I was shocked as it demands me to get a thrice amount of a prize.
Another important point is that opportunities are all over the world, people prefer to move to that place where they get better job and facilities.
Exploring the minor point, one noteway arguement is that getting your own home required your time and dedication. For example, when I was living in a flat with my parents which they owned, there are many things to do on daily basis like submitting the utitlity bills and renovation works. While renting a house keeps you free from these things, as you contracted with a company or a owner. Also the important benefit of renting a house is that you can get a flat in your own budget.
To conclude, renting a house is far better than owning a home as it gives you choice of your own pocket friendly deals and in this busy world it allows you to do other important things more efficiently.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You give a clear overall view that home ownership is negative compared with renting, and you offer relevant reasons, including the high cost of buying and the flexibility to move for work. However, the task asks both why owning a home is important in some countries and whether this is positive or negative. Your response mainly argues against ownership and does not explain why people value it, such as security, status, or investment. The reasons you do give are also only briefly developed: the lottery example illustrates cost, but the point about job opportunities needs a clearer link to renting. Address both parts directly and explain each main idea more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
Your response has an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, and the reader can generally follow your main position. You also use signposting such as “For instance” and “To conclude.” However, the progression is not consistently clear. “Exploring the minor point” does not accurately signal the paragraph’s role, and the paragraph about moving for work is left as a single undeveloped point rather than being connected to the next paragraph. Some linking is mechanical, with repeated “Another important point” and “Also.” Organise the body around distinct reasons, develop each in its own paragraph, and use clearer links to show how each reason supports your position.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “basic necessities,” “renovation works,” “utility bills,” and “pocket friendly,” so you can communicate the general subject. However, inaccurate word choice, collocation, and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause. Examples include “widely considerable debate,” “noteway arguement,” “owing a home,” and “outweights.” Some expressions are also imprecise, such as “get a thrice amount of a prize.” Aim for natural combinations and accurate forms, and choose vocabulary that expresses your meaning directly. Proofreading spelling and checking unfamiliar phrases in context would make your ideas clearer and more fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You use both simple sentences and attempts at longer structures, including a contrast with “although” and a relative clause in “where they get better job and facilities.” However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to affect clarity. For example, “owning a home had many benefits” has an inconsistent verb form, while “a middle class man could afford” does not fit the intended general statement. In “when I was living … there are many things,” the tense shifts without a clear reason. Articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries also need attention. Practise building accurate clauses first, then combine them, and check tense consistency and punctuation.
