Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The opening identifies the chart’s subject and period, and correctly notes that it distinguishes cruise-ship visitors from those staying on the island. However, the response does not actually summarise the data: it gives no figures, trends, comparisons, or meaningful overview of how visitor numbers changed. The statement “Start from the beginning year and explain the other years” describes what a report might do rather than reporting a feature shown in the graph. The response is also substantially below the required 150 words, leaving too little space to address the task. To improve, state the overall rise in total visitors, compare the two categories, and support these points with selected figures from the graph.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: the first paragraph introduces the graph, and the second begins with “Overall.” The time period and visitor categories also give the reader a general sense of the topic. However, the second paragraph does not develop a logical summary; phrases such as “Start from the beginning year and explain the other years” are instructions about the report rather than connected information. The ideas therefore do not progress from an overview to specific trends, and linking is minimal. Use a clear sequence: introduce the chart, give an overview of the main trends, then describe the categories with comparisons and figures. This would make the organisation more purposeful and easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses a small set of relevant terms, including “tourists,” “Caribbean island,” “cruise ships,” and “visitors,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the vocabulary is repetitive and does not include the language needed to describe graph trends or comparisons. Some expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “million of visitor mention in the diagram” and “In the graph value are mentioned in the points.” There is also a spelling error in “particulae.” Build a more useful range of chart vocabulary, such as “the total rose,” “remained stable,” and “accounted for,” and use accurate forms such as “millions of visitors” and “data points.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts both a longer introductory sentence and shorter statements, and the opening communicates the basic topic. However, grammatical control is uneven, and several sentences are incomplete or incorrectly formed. For example, “Overall, million of visitor mention in the diagram” lacks a clear subject and a correctly formed verb, while “Start from the beginning year and explain the other years” is an imperative rather than a report of the data. In “there are two types of visitors which are,” the clause is awkwardly constructed, and the following list is not integrated smoothly. Practise complete subject–verb sentences in the present simple, with accurate plural forms and articles, before attempting more complex structures.
