Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response identifies the broad upward trend and mentions both visitor groups, but it reports only a small part of the graph and does not provide a complete overview of how the two categories changed. The claim that most visitors came to stay on the island is not true throughout: cruise-ship visitors rose to 2 million in 2017, exceeding the 1.5 million staying on the island. Several figures are also inaccurate or unclear; for example, the 2010 total was about 1 million, but cruise-ship visitors were about 0.25 million, not 0.5 million. The final sentence is cut off at “201”, leaving the later trend unexplained. The response is 41 words below the required minimum, which contributes to its limited coverage. Include the key stages and accurate comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response into an introduction, an overview and a detail paragraph, and expressions such as “Overall” and “Throughout the period” help signal the purpose of those sections. However, progression is limited because the account stops partway through a sentence and does not move systematically through the years or compare the two visitor groups. The transition “While” is used awkwardly after a full stop, and the repeated reference to increasing visitors does not develop the information. Build a clear sequence: introduce the graph, summarise the main trends, then report selected figures in chronological order. Use linking words only where they clarify the relationship between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the general subject, with relevant terms such as “line graph”, “visitors”, “cruise ships” and “increase”. There is some variation in phrasing, including “with the passage of time” and “surge”, but the range is limited and some choices are inaccurate or unnatural. “A few people” is too informal and imprecise for figures in millions, while “visit it on cruise ships” does not clearly describe where visitors stayed. “Surge” also suggests a sharp rise that is not clearly supported by the figures given. Aim for precise chart language and natural collocations, such as “the number of visitors rose” and “stayed aboard cruise ships”.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and more complex sentence forms, including “Throughout the period, there was an increase…” and a sentence beginning “People who came…”. However, the range is limited, and errors are frequent enough to make parts of the account difficult to follow. Examples include “who visit Caribbean island” instead of a correctly formed past-tense description, “in between 8 years”, and “1 millions”. The sentence beginning “While” is a fragment, and the final sentence is incomplete. Punctuation is also unreliable, as shown by the misplaced full stop and spacing in “it,approximately”. Practise complete sentences, consistent past-tense reporting, and accurate articles and plural forms.
