Student answer (Band 7.0)

The graph illustrates the number of foreigns visiting particular Caribbean island over the period from 2010 to 2017.

Overall, the total number of visitors increased substantially over the period, with tourists staying on cruise ships showing the most significant growth, while the number of visitors staying on the island remained relatively stable after 2013.

At the beginning of the period, the island welcomed 1 million tourists in total, comprising approximately 0.7 million visitors staying on the island and 0.3 million staying on cruise ships. The total number then increased steadily, reaching 2 million in 2013 and 2.5 million in 2014.

During the latter half of the period, the overall figure continued to rise despite a brief plateau at around 2.7 million in 2015 and 2016. By the end of the period, the total number of visitors had climbed significantly to 3.5 million.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the graph, including the overall upward trend and the distinction between cruise ship and island-stay visitors. However, the response is 142 words long, failing the 150-word minimum requirement. This under-length significantly impacts the ability to fully develop the analysis. While the overview is clear, the lack of detail regarding the specific growth of the cruise ship category compared to the island-stay category in the latter half of the period limits the depth of the response. To improve, ensure all data points are fully explored and the minimum word count is met to allow for a more comprehensive summary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, moving from the start of the period to the end. Cohesive devices such as 'At the beginning of the period', 'During the latter half', and 'By the end of the period' are used effectively to guide the reader through the timeline. Paragraphing is appropriate, and the information is grouped logically. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of cohesive links to connect the two categories more fluidly within the body paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with terms like 'substantially', 'significant growth', and 'remained relatively stable' used correctly. However, there is a noticeable error in the introduction: 'foreigns' is incorrect; it should be 'foreign tourists' or 'foreign visitors'. Additionally, the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited. To improve, try to use more varied synonyms for 'increase' (e.g., 'soared', 'surged') and avoid repeating the same phrasing. The word choice is functional but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and easy to understand, and the grammar is generally accurate. There are minor slips, such as 'visiting particular Caribbean island', which should be 'visiting a particular Caribbean island'. The use of 'comprising' and 'despite' shows an attempt at more complex sentence structures, which is positive. To improve, focus on article usage (a/the) and ensure that complex sentences are consistently error-free to demonstrate better control over your grammatical range.
