Student answer (Band 7.0)

The line graph illustrates the count of tourists visiting a Caribbean island who stayed either on the island or a cruise ship, between 2010 and 2017. The unit of measure is millions of visitors.

Overall, total number of visitors has almost tripled over the years with a drastic rise post 2016. From 2012 onwards, trend for tourists staying on the island depicts a sudden growth whereas number of visitors staying on cruise experienced growth after 2011 before seeing a decline after in 2015.

In detail, the count of tourists staying on a cruise ship remained stable at around 0.7 million between 2010 and 2011 before seeing growth till 2013, while visitors staying on island showed a fluctuating trend between 2010 and 2013 with count oscillating between 0.25 million and 0.5 million before seeing an exponential growth afterwards. After experiencing a sudden growth, the number of people staying on island surpassed tourists on cruise ships in 2015 to 2 million in 2017. In comparison, tourists on cruise ship could reach the count of only 1.5 million, same as in 2013 to 2015.

In conclusion, One of the Caribbean island's tourist count has tripled from 1 million in 2010 to 3.5 million in 2017 where around 0.5 most tourists prefer staying on island in 2017 instead of staying on cruise ships.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all requirements of the task. You have identified the main trends and provided relevant data points to support your descriptions. The overview is clear and highlights the significant growth in total visitors. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in data interpretation; for instance, stating the total tripled from 1 million to 3.5 million is slightly imprecise based on the graph, and the claim that 0.5 million preferred the island in 2017 is unclear. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points cited are precisely aligned with the visual information provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, overview, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'In detail', 'In comparison', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing in the final paragraph is a bit confusing. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but improving the flow between sentences within paragraphs would enhance the overall coherence. Ensure that pronouns and cohesive markers clearly link back to the specific subjects mentioned earlier.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'oscillating', 'exponential growth', and 'surpassed' effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'count of tourists' (which is better expressed as 'number of tourists') and 'One of the Caribbean island's tourist count' in the conclusion, which is grammatically awkward. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, some phrasing remains slightly unnatural. Focusing on precise collocations will help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the' trend, 'the' number) and awkward phrasing like 'after seeing a decline after in 2015'. The sentence 'In comparison, tourists on cruise ship could reach the count of only 1.5 million' is also slightly confusing in its structure. To improve, focus on consistent article usage and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with greater precision to avoid ambiguity.
