Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graph illustrates the number of tourists visiting a specific island in the Caribbean from 2010 to 2017.
Overall, the number of visitors increased sharply, either visitors staying on cruise ships or staying on the island. Specifically, tourists preferred to stay on ships more than staying on an island.
Millions of tourists visited a Caribbean island in 7 years. In 2010, visitors preferred to stay on an island rather than on cruise ships. Approximately 0.75 million visitors liked to stay on an island and for the next three years this figure reached 1.5 million and was stable for a couple of years. After that, there was a decrement for a year but in 2017 it remained stable at 1.5 million visitors.
In 2010, around 0.25 million visitors stayed on cruise ships, and this figure fluctuated for over 3 years at 0.5 million people. Then, the graph rose from 2013 to 2017 and nearly 2 million people preferred to stay on cruise ships. In total, 2.5 million visitors increased over that time from 10 lakhs to 35 lakhs. To be more precise, the total visitors increased from 2010 to
2015 and remained stable for a year and then rose sharply from 2016 to 2017.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview. You covered both categories (cruise ship and island stay) and made relevant comparisons. However, the data reporting is slightly inaccurate in places; for instance, you mention '10 lakhs to 35 lakhs', which is confusing as the graph uses millions. Additionally, the statement that visitors 'preferred to stay on ships more than staying on an island' is a good summary, but ensure your data points (e.g., the 2017 figures) are precisely aligned with the graph to avoid misinterpretation. Overall, you have addressed the requirements of the task well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs focusing on the two categories. You use some cohesive devices like 'Specifically', 'In 2010', and 'After that' to guide the reader. However, the progression between sentences in the third paragraph is slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the transition between the description of island stays and cruise ship stays is smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though the final sentence of the essay feels a bit disconnected from the preceding data analysis.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuated', 'sharply', and 'remained stable'. However, there are some issues with word choice and precision. For example, 'decrement' is not the most natural choice in this context; 'decline' or 'decrease' would be better. The use of 'lakhs' is inappropriate for an international IELTS exam, as it is a regional numbering system; you should stick to the units provided in the graph (millions). Expanding your range of synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'either visitors staying on cruise ships or staying on the island', which is slightly awkward; a better phrasing would be 'whether visitors stayed on cruise ships or on the island'. You also have some minor issues with preposition usage and article placement. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining your use of complex sentence connectors.
