Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the graph, including the overall trends for total visitors, island stayers, and cruise ship passengers. You successfully identified the starting and ending points and noted significant changes. However, the overview is slightly weak; it mentions that total visitors had the highest figure, which is expected, but it could be more descriptive regarding the overall upward trend. Additionally, some data points are described with slight inaccuracies or confusing phrasing, such as the description of the cruise ship data. To improve, ensure that your overview highlights the most significant trends (e.g., the consistent growth in total visitors) rather than just stating the obvious.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on different categories. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Subsequently' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by repetitive sentence structures and some mechanical transitions. The referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly when referring to 'total' or 'it' without a clear noun phrase. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that guides the reader through the data.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuated', 'surged', 'marginally', and 'sharply'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'total increased' (should be 'the total number increased'), 'reached at', and 'sored' (likely a misspelling of 'soared'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your report. To improve, focus on learning the correct prepositions that follow verbs of change and ensure you use nouns and verbs in their correct forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('people was stayed', 'visitors was sored') and the misuse of articles ('visited island'). There are also issues with tense consistency and preposition usage ('reached at', 'decreased marginally at'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding the intended meaning. To improve, pay closer attention to basic sentence construction, specifically ensuring that subjects and verbs agree and that articles are used correctly before nouns.
