Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the graph, including the overall trends for total visitors, those staying on the island, and cruise ship passengers. You successfully identified the starting and ending points and noted significant changes. However, the overview is slightly confusing; referring to 'total' as a category alongside the other two is imprecise, as 'total' is the sum of the other two. Additionally, some data points are described with slight inaccuracies, such as the claim that cruise ship visitors 'surged by 0.5 million' in 2011, which is not clearly supported by the visual data. To improve, ensure your overview clearly distinguishes between the total and the two sub-categories and double-check your data reporting for precision.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on specific categories. The progression of ideas is generally clear. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'After that' and 'Furthermore' to start sentences. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when you use the word 'total' as a noun to refer to the total number of visitors. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that subjects are clearly defined would help the flow of the essay and move your score higher.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'increased', 'surged', and 'decreased marginally'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choices and collocations, such as 'total increased from 1 million', 'reached at 3.5 million', and 'cruise ships visitors was sored'. These errors occasionally make the text feel unnatural. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations (e.g., 'the total number of visitors' rather than just 'total') and ensure that your verb choices are grammatically appropriate for the context of describing statistical data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the clarity of the writing. Common issues include incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'was rose', 'was stayed', 'was sored'), missing articles, and preposition errors (e.g., 'reached at'). While these errors rarely prevent the reader from understanding the main point, they are frequent enough to impact the overall accuracy. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct usage of passive voice constructions. Reviewing basic sentence patterns for describing data will help you produce more error-free sentences.
