IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows the number of tourists visiting a particular Caribbean island between 2010 and 2017.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The graph illustrates the different numbers of tourists visiting on a sepecific island named Caribbean from the year 2010 to 2017.
Overall, the number kept increasing throughout these years but the only decrease we see here is in the number of visitors staying on the island. Otherwise, minor fluctuations appeared.
In the early years, out of almost million people only 0.5 million visitors stayed on the cruise ships. With time we can see that there was an dramatic decrease until 2014. After that the number goes upto 2 million in 2017.
Definately, the number of visitors staying on the island was increasing after 2011 and then in the year 2015 when it went upto 1.5 million. Then we can see a small fluctuation in the numbers. Still it stands on the same number of 1.5 million people in the 2017, Respectively.
The total number of people, who keep visiting Caribbean island is blowing up noticebly. Because the number went from a million to 2.5 million people and then there was this massive jump in the total number of tourists with 3.5 million.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the graph, such as the overall upward trend and the specific data points for cruise ship and island visitors. However, the analysis is hampered by significant inaccuracies in data interpretation. For instance, the claim that cruise ship visitors saw a 'dramatic decrease until 2014' and then reached 2 million by 2017 is not clearly supported by the visual data provided. Furthermore, the description of the total number of tourists is confusing and lacks precision. To improve, ensure that data points are read accurately and that comparisons between the two categories are more clearly articulated to provide a coherent summary of the trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused, such as the awkward transition 'Definately' and the misuse of 'Respectively' at the end of a sentence. The progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed, particularly in the final paragraph where the explanation of the total number of tourists becomes difficult to follow. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would significantly enhance the flow and logical progression of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally limited and sometimes inappropriate for an academic report. Phrases like 'blowing up noticebly' and 'massive jump' are too informal for IELTS Task 1. There are also errors in word choice, such as 'sepecific' (spelling) and the incorrect use of 'Respectively'. While the student attempts to describe trends, the range of vocabulary is restricted, and the reliance on basic descriptors prevents the response from achieving a higher score. Incorporating more precise academic vocabulary related to trends and data would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'visiting on a sepecific island', 'the number goes upto', and 'the number of people, who keep visiting Caribbean island'. Subject-verb agreement and preposition usage are inconsistent. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the frequency of errors in basic grammar and punctuation prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence construction and proofreading for basic errors would help improve the accuracy of the writing.
