Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the main features of the graph, but it struggles with accuracy and clarity. While you identify the two categories (cruise ship and island visitors), the description of the trends is often confusing or factually incorrect based on the provided data. For instance, stating that cruise ship visitors reached 2 million and then dropped to 0.2 million does not align with the typical interpretation of such graphs. Furthermore, the overview is weak and lacks a clear summary of the overall trends. To improve, focus on identifying the starting and ending points, the highest and lowest values, and any significant fluctuations, ensuring these match the visual data provided.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the progression of ideas is often disjointed, making it difficult for the reader to follow the narrative of the data. Cohesive devices are used in a very limited and sometimes mechanical way (e.g., 'But', 'After', 'In 2010'). There is a lack of logical flow between sentences, and the referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the sentence 'After the amount was increased it was reached at 2 million.' Improving the use of linking words like 'consequently', 'subsequently', or 'in contrast' would help create a more cohesive response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. You rely on basic terms like 'grow', 'increased', and 'low', which restricts your ability to describe the trends precisely. There are also several instances of incorrect word choice and word formation, such as 'explorer' instead of 'tourists' or 'visitors', and 'stated' instead of 'stayed'. Spelling errors like 'millions' (pluralized incorrectly in context) and 'at list' (instead of 'at least') also detract from the quality of the writing. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise vocabulary for describing trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'remained stable'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The grammatical control is weak, with frequent errors that occasionally impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement ('The line graph illustrate'), missing articles ('visited Caribbean island'), and incorrect tense usage ('was growing', 'was rise'). Sentence structures are mostly simple, and attempts at more complex sentences often result in errors, such as 'After many years rapidly grow into the stay lived on the cruise ships.' You need to focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring that subjects and verbs agree and that tenses are used consistently when describing past data.
