Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the graph, such as the trends for visitors staying on the island and those on cruise ships. However, the analysis is somewhat inconsistent. For instance, the description of the data for 2012 and 2013 is confusing, and the mention of 'total number' is not clearly supported by the provided graph data. While the key trends are identified, the lack of precision in reporting the figures (e.g., '0.7', '1.2') and the unclear summary of the total figures prevent a higher score. To improve, ensure that data points are accurately transcribed and that the overview clearly highlights the most significant trends without including confusing or inaccurate summary calculations.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. Phrases like 'But with time members shows interest' and 'Looking to the total number' feel disjointed. The progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by awkward transitions between sentences. While there is an overall attempt at a logical flow, the lack of sophisticated linking words and the repetitive nature of some sentence structures make the cohesion feel somewhat basic. Improving the variety of transition signals would significantly enhance the flow of the writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for higher bands. There are several spelling errors, such as 'desipite' (despite) and 'stidy' (steady), and word choice issues, such as using 'members' instead of 'tourists' or 'visitors'. The range of vocabulary is limited, relying on repetitive phrasing to describe trends. To reach a higher band, you should focus on using more varied synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' and ensure that you are using topic-specific terminology correctly. Proofreading for common spelling mistakes would also improve the overall quality of the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('The graph illustrate', 'members shows interest') and incorrect article usage ('on island', 'on cruise Ships'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas and periods. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent sentence construction will help improve your accuracy.
