Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the graph, such as the overall upward trend and the total visitor numbers. However, the report lacks a clear overview or summary of the trends, which is essential for a high band score. The data reporting is somewhat repetitive, listing figures year-by-year rather than grouping them into meaningful trends or making effective comparisons. For instance, stating 'In 2010 only 1 million people visit' followed by 'In 2011 the numbers of visitors increases' is a mechanical approach. To improve, you should highlight the most significant changes and group the data to show the overall progression of the island versus cruise ship visitors more analytically.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is presented as a single block of text, which significantly hinders readability and logical flow. Paragraphing is essential in IELTS writing to separate the introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. While there is a chronological progression, the lack of cohesive devices makes the writing feel like a list of facts rather than a cohesive report. You rely heavily on simple sentence structures starting with 'In [year]', which creates a repetitive rhythm. Using transition words like 'consequently', 'meanwhile', or 'in contrast' would help connect your ideas more fluidly and improve the overall structure of your response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. You frequently use basic phrases such as 'people that were staying' and 'number of visitors were'. There is little attempt to use a wider range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'remained stable', or 'experienced a significant rise'. Furthermore, there are errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'how much people visit' instead of 'the number of visitors'. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise terminology related to data analysis and avoid repeating the same sentence structures throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of information. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'the number of visitors were' (should be 'was') and 'people on the island were decreases' (should be 'decreased'). Additionally, there are tense inconsistencies, such as mixing present and past tenses when describing historical data. The sentence structures are predominantly simple, with very few attempts at complex sentences. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and using a variety of sentence structures, including relative clauses and passive voice, to describe the data more accurately.
