Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The graph illustrates the proportion of tourist visiting a particular Caribbean island between 2010 and 2017.

Overall, the proportion of tourist staying on cruise ships was slightly increasing where, in contrast, the number of visitors staying on island declined. The total was constantly increased.

According to the both, where visitors staying, cruise ships had the highest number rather than staying on island. From 2012, the proportion of cruise boats constantly increased till 2017, where 2 millions prefer it more. But from 2011, the visitors staying on island slightly increased and decreased in 2016 around 1.3 millions of visitors, and then it rose and become 1.5.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. While you have identified the main trends, the analysis is underdeveloped. You mention that the total increased, but you do not provide enough specific data points or comparisons to fully satisfy the task requirements. The description of the data is somewhat fragmented, and the failure to reach the required length means the task is only partially addressed. To improve, ensure you provide a more comprehensive overview of the data, including specific figures for the start, end, and any significant fluctuations throughout the period.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the flow between ideas is somewhat mechanical. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Overall' and 'In contrast', but the transitions between sentences are often abrupt. The logical progression is hindered by the brevity of the response. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus. For example, you could group the data more effectively by comparing the two categories throughout the period rather than describing them in isolation, which would improve the overall structure and cohesion of your report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision expected at higher bands. You use repetitive phrasing such as 'proportion of tourist' and 'staying on island'. There are also some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'cruise boats' instead of 'cruise ships' and '2 millions' (which should be '2 million'). To improve, focus on using more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'reached a peak'. Expanding your vocabulary will help you describe the trends more accurately and professionally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. For instance, 'the proportion of tourist' should be plural ('tourists'), and 'the total was constantly increased' is an incorrect passive construction. Additionally, 'According to the both' is grammatically incorrect. Punctuation and sentence structure are often shaky, which occasionally makes the meaning slightly unclear. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice when describing data. Reviewing basic sentence patterns will help you produce more error-free sentences.
