Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The line graph illustrates the number of tourists visiting Caribbean-island between 2010 and 2017, distinguishing between visitors staying on cruise ships and those staying on the island.

Overall, the total number of tourists increased considerably over the period. While visitors staying on the island accounted for the majority at the beginning, the number of cruise ship tourists rose sharply and became the larger group by the end of the period.

In 2010, the island received around 1 million tourists in total with approximately 0.7 million staying on the island and 0.3 million staying on cruise ships. The total number of visitors increased steadily to about 2.5 million in 2014. During this time, the number of tourists staying on the island rose to around 1.5 million before remaining relatively stable.

By contrast, the figure for cruise ship visitors grew more rapidly. After remaining below 0.5 million until 2012, it climbed significantly to 1 million in 2014 and then surged to 2 million by 2017. Consequently, the total number of tourists reached a peak of 3.5 million in the final year.

You have clearly highlighted the overall growth and the shift in the dominant group by the end of the period. Key data points, such as the starting figures in 2010 and the peak in 2017, are accurately reported to support the summary. The overview is concise and provides a clear picture of the data trends. All parts of the task are covered well, and the information is logically selected to provide a comprehensive summary of the graph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a clear focus: the introduction, the overview, and the detailed body paragraphs. You have used cohesive devices such as 'While', 'By contrast', and 'Consequently' effectively to link ideas and show relationships between the data sets. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information flows smoothly from one point to the next. The referencing is clear, and the structure supports the reader's understanding of the trends described.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a report on data. Phrases like 'rose sharply', 'remained relatively stable', and 'surged' are used effectively to describe trends. There is a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey precision, and the word choice is generally natural. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, incorporating a few more sophisticated or less common collocations could elevate the response further. There are no spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response uses a variety of sentence structures, including complex sentences, with a high level of accuracy. Most sentences are error-free, and the control over punctuation and tense is consistent. For example, the use of participial phrases and subordinate clauses shows good grammatical flexibility. There are no significant errors that cause confusion. The writing is clear and professional, meeting the requirements for a high band score in this criterion.
