Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the graph, such as the trends for cruise ship and island visitors. However, the analysis is hampered by inaccuracies in data interpretation. For example, stating that the number of cruise ship visitors in 2010 was 'between 0 to 0.5 millions' is vague, and the claim that the total number of visitors reached 3.5 million is not supported by the provided data. The report lacks a clear overview or summary of the overall trends, which is a key requirement for Task 1. The information is presented in a somewhat disjointed manner, making it difficult to identify the most significant trends at a glance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'then' and 'after that' to link sentences. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when describing the trends over time. The transition between the description of cruise ship visitors and island visitors is abrupt, and the lack of a clear introduction or concluding summary affects the overall flow of the report. To improve, you should use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. There are several instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'members of tourists' and 'slide increase' (likely intended to be 'slight'). The use of 'millions' as a plural noun after a specific number is grammatically incorrect in this context (e.g., '1.5 millions'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the basic meaning, it lacks the precision and range required for a higher band score. You should focus on using more accurate terminology for describing trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'remained stable'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. There are issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'the number of tourists... are' (should be 'is'). Tense usage is inconsistent, switching between present and past without clear justification. Punctuation is also problematic, with missing spaces after periods and inconsistent capitalization. While some simple sentence structures are used correctly, there is a lack of complex sentence forms. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure consistent tense usage when describing historical data.
