Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response attempts to report the data but fails to provide a clear overview or identify significant trends. The information is presented as a list of figures rather than a cohesive summary. There is no attempt to group the data logically or highlight key comparisons, such as the growth patterns of cruise ship visitors versus island stayers. The lack of an introductory overview and the mechanical listing of numbers mean the main features are not effectively communicated. To improve, you should group data by trends (e.g., periods of increase or stability) and provide a clear summary statement at the beginning.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The response lacks paragraphing and logical structure. It reads as a series of disconnected sentences rather than a coherent report. There is a complete absence of cohesive devices (such as 'however', 'meanwhile', or 'subsequently') to link the data points. The progression of information is confusing, as the text jumps between years and categories without a clear plan. To improve, you must organize your response into distinct paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group the data logically. Using transition words will help guide the reader through your analysis.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary is extremely limited and repetitive. You rely heavily on the phrase 'visitors staying on' and 'is' to describe the data. There is no attempt to use varied verbs or nouns to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'remained stable', or 'experienced a significant rise'. The lack of variety makes the report monotonous and difficult to follow. To achieve a higher score, you should learn and apply specific vocabulary for describing graphs, such as 'upward trend', 'plateaued', 'dramatic increase', and 'respectively'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede clarity. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'visitors is 0.5 million'), missing articles (e.g., 'illustrate number of tourists'), and incorrect preposition usage. The sentence structures are very simple and repetitive, lacking the variety required for higher bands. There is no evidence of complex sentence structures. To improve, focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring that subjects and verbs agree, and practice using articles correctly. Additionally, try to combine simple sentences using conjunctions to create more complex, fluid structures.
