Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the main features of the graph, but the overview is unclear and lacks a coherent summary of the trends. The description of the data is often confusing, particularly regarding the categories (total tourists vs. those on the island vs. cruise ship passengers). The figures provided are sometimes inaccurate or poorly contextualized, making it difficult for the reader to follow the trends. While the response covers the period and the categories, the lack of clarity in reporting the main features and the failure to provide a clear, accurate overview prevents it from reaching a higher band. More focus is needed on identifying key trends rather than listing data points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused, such as the repetitive use of 'after this' and 'then'. The transition between the different categories of tourists is abrupt, and the lack of clear referencing makes the relationships between the data points difficult to follow. The overview is not clearly separated from the body paragraphs, which disrupts the flow of the report. To improve, you should use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'it was remain stable' and 'it was increased' are used repeatedly, which indicates a lack of lexical variety. There are also errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'highest total tourist visit a caribbean island' and 'normally fall down'. The response lacks the precise terminology required for describing graphs, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'remained constant'. To achieve a higher score, you should focus on learning specific verbs and nouns used to describe trends and ensure you are using them in the correct grammatical context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'total tourist visiting was increased'), missing articles (e.g., 'staying on island'), and incorrect verb tenses. The sentence structures are predominantly simple, and attempts at more complex sentences often result in errors, such as the run-on sentences in the overview. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary spaces before commas and periods. Focusing on basic sentence construction and ensuring correct verb forms will help improve the clarity and accuracy of your writing.
