The line graph illustrates the number of tourists visiting a particular Caribbean island over a period of 2010 and 2017 based on the visitors that are staying on the island, cruise ships, and the total number of visitors.
Overall, the total number of visitors accounted for the highest number of people and experienced a considerable upward trend, while visitors who stayed on cruise ships accounted for the second-highest number of tourists and experienced a significant increase throughout the period, despite the fluctuations. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all three categories (total, cruise, and island stay) and made relevant comparisons, such as noting that the total number of visitors dominated the other categories. The data points are generally accurate, and the progression of the figures is logical. To reach a higher band, ensure that you provide more precise data comparisons; for instance, you could explicitly state the gap between the categories at the start and end of the period to strengthen the analytical aspect of your response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Looking at', and 'Regarding' to guide the reader through the information. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the general trend to specific category details. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different data sets. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices slightly more to avoid a somewhat mechanical feel, and ensure that the transition between the overview and the detailed body paragraphs is as seamless as possible.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'considerable upward trend', 'significant increase', and 'dominated among the three categories' are well-chosen and appropriate for an academic report. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To move into the higher bands, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common synonyms to describe trends, such as 'surged', 'plateaued', or 'witnessed a marginal rise', rather than relying on 'experienced' or 'saw' repeatedly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
Your writing displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is generally sound. You successfully use complex structures, such as 'despite the fluctuations' and 'while visitors who stayed on cruise ships started with...'. There are minor issues with preposition usage and phrasing, such as 'over a period of 2010 and 2017' (should be 'between 2010 and 2017'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not hinder the reader's understanding of the data.
